The year of yes

I joined the Finish Revolution, and thanks to Kidspot and Finish, I was invited to do a Masterclass with Coda's Adam D'Sylva. I love Coda - we spent a very leisurely afternoon eating a sensational meal there on one visit to Melbourne. However, when the email came through, my first reaction was to decline. You see, I don't cook. At all. The kids get sausages or things I can microwave, I can boil an egg or fry a fish, as long as it's forgiving like salmon but I can't whip up anything I would serve adult friends. I can't do that fancy chopping, I can't even cut a mango properly. The stone throws me everytime.
The big thing, though, is I have no interest in cooking. I find it dull. Along with ironing, it's an necessarily evil, but if I won lotto, I'd get a personal chef just to take over. I don't even watch Masterchef or any of the myriad of cooking shows, I hate just hearing about it.

So my immediate reaction was to decline.

However, as the Torshlusspanik list to some extent involves putting me into my discomfort zone, I've RSVP'd yes. I am working on the theory there will be a helper to help me, and then I can eat what we (the helper predominately) make, because I do like to eat. So that will make it worthwhile (always has to be some sort of payoff), and you never know, it may be easy enough for me to repeat and then I can start inviting people over for dinner to show off my new found skill. Each set of friends will only be invited once, as that will be the only meal I can make, but still, you have to start somewhere.

So while you are reading this, I am no doubt enduring an exercise in humiliation, while the other masterclassers hit their stride.

Torshlusspanik List:
1. Shooting (check)
2. Fencing (check)
3. Play croquet at Croquet Club
4. Laser skeet
5. Off road buggy driving
6. Play Assassins Creed
7. Jetpacking (check)
8. The Color Run (in training)
9. Invent something
10. Cooking masterclass - (too ambitious to say learn to cook a guest worthy meal, I doubt even the magical D'Sylva is skilled enough for that!)

This year, I'm trying to stop my automatic reaction to say NO and turn it into the year of YES, regardless of potential failure and embarrassment. If nothing else, it should make good reading...

  1. I actually love cooking, but these days find it a chore. So I don't do it, because luckily my husband loves cooking more than me. In fact the only chore I do is the laundry. And clean the bathroom. And vacuum...but it doesn't add up to much. I never iron. Ever.

    1. Yeah, I try not to iron either. And Partner does the cooking for us and other adults...so I hear you.

  2. Good luck Lydia - I am exactly the same as you, no interest, passion or talent for cooking. I hope you have a great time and don't feel too out of your depth! Kirsty @ My Home Truths

    1. Just had to nod and look interested, then eat, so I think I passed with flying colours. Except the filmed interview where I kept going cross eyed looking at the microphone. And sounding like a moron. I so hope I get edited out completely....

I registered for The Colour Run yesterday - can't wait - good luck !!!
Last year I started turning No into Yes and pushing my comfort zones - I aim to continue with that this year - here's to a successful year for both of us !!!
    Have a great day !

    1. Yay to you on the Colour Run! We pick up our pack this week and then it's next Sunday - but our training has gone off the boil, so I suspect it will be a Colour Walk for us, given the kids...look forward to seeing your pics.
It's funny how you just start automatically saying no as you get older. I now say no and then when I hear it, I have to say, actually, I'll do it...but the no is the instant reaction I have.

  5. I love cooking! But I'm struggling with being able to stand for any period of time to do so these days. :(
As for Yes... I'm learning to say "No" more this year... well attempting to! :)

    1. That's not good to hear if you love doing it. As for No, that easy, say it a few times and then it becomes automatic...
      take care :)

  6. I'm with you on the cooking. You are a brave woman ...
What is jet packing? Is that like a jetpack on your back and you get to fly? That sounds like fun!

  7. To me cooking rates up there with having to make small talk with people you would rather not - PAINFUL! My poor kids, my mum is a super cook, what the hell happened to me : ) Emily
