Alphabet of Authors

The Where the Wild Things Were approved reading list:

Art Spiegelman (Maus is a comic for the non-comic readers; won the Pulitzer)
Bill Willingham (love the Fables series - he's very clever)
Cormac McCarthy (The Road is amazing)
David Weisner
Eric Carle
F. Scott Fitzgerald (Great Gatsby is one of the best books written!)
George Orwell (Poor Boxer!)
Herman Koch (The Dinner is a great book)
I - Wake in Fright (Kenneth Cook)
Jon Krakauer (Always interesting topics)
Kennedy Toole, Jon (Confederacy of Dunces made me laugh so much!)
Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland is brilliant, though often read too young and dismissed)
Maurice Sednak
Nina Berberova
O.Henry (you can't like short stories and not know a few of his)
Pamela Allen (under-rated genius, in my opinion)
Q -  Michael Chabon The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay  (give me a break!)
Ray Bradbury (genius)
Sparkle Hayter (junk crime but fun, and what a great name!)
Tardi, Jacques (It was the war of the trenches is deeply moving)
U -  Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (it has a U in it...)
Vonnegut, Kurt
White Guard by  Mikhail Bulgakov
X Needed a spot for Feed by M.T.Anderson, so it's here. (Geddit, X marks the spot)
Yoshimoto, Banana
Z, World War (cheating but it's worth a read - interesting ideas)

So if you're looking for something new to read, there's a few you may want to venture into...or not. Who'd be in your alphabet of authors?

    1. Everyone reads in different circles - so do a list of your own and I might learn an author or two!

    1. Given the number of comics & children's picture books in there, I think that may mean I'm not that well read! ;)

  4. I am so bad at remembering books for their authors, mainly for characters. There's another A to Z list! There's a few I recognise, mainly the kids book authors!

  5. I Must Confess: I've never been a fan of Alice in Wonderland. Then one day I read an article saying the whole thing is about Borderline Personality Disorder - which my mum had - and I realised why I hated it! Google Alice and BPD and you'll see what I mean ...

    1. Not Alice!! Maybe those around her. I will google but I think more along the lines of "what would Alice do?" as a philosophy to aspire to (and that argument is covered in the Alice in Wonderland & Philosophy series.) Alice is strong minded and doesn't conform...

  8. Yay for Eric featuring there! A very interesting list but most are beyond me at this stage of my life!

  9. I'm going to have to bookmark this for future reference. I've just had the weekend internet free and actually found the time to read an actual book and now determined to fit more time in for reading.

  10. I've only read a few of those authors and that was decades ago when I was at school! I only read 'chick lit' type of books that don't require much concentration these days. Sigh.

  11. Thank you for this list of well worth investigating authors.
The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy is my favourite of his. By the way, I am wearing an Eric Carle dress right now (I love it, I saw it in a shop window and thought that it looked like a children's book, only to discover that, essentially, it was!
I also have a huge print on my wall, one of those ones that has the whole text of a book outlined in an image. This one is the text of The Great Gatsby :)

  13. I just couldn't get in to The Road by Cormac McCarthy, one of the very few books that I've put aside halfway through!
I'd probably put Phillipa Gregory in mine, J.K. Rowling, Tolkien, George R. R. Martin, and lately I'm intrigued by John Green so maybe I'd put him in there too.
