Rules to live by....

I'm sure you've all seen this wonderful post by Regina Brett with 45 rules to live by - some classics such as "When in doubt, just take the next small step" and "If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it".

I did write a post on mottos to live by - My favourite being "Walked in, danced out".

But for this confessional, I'll keep it simple. The rule to live by is "Don't be a dick".
Don't take out your anger and aggression on others (especially on the road), don't treat your spouse like they're irrelevant, and don't take them for granted. Don't throw away relationships due to selfishness and ego. Don't walk away from your responsibilities. Don't turn other people's lives into fodder for gossip. Don't steal. Don't hurt people for your own entertainment. Treat people with respect. If you wouldn't like it, don't do it to others. And a myriad of other Don't's that can all be summed up with the simple:

Don't be a dick!

Sometimes, we have to look beyond our own horizon, we have to walk in the other man's shoes. We know we can do better, and we must always try to do so. We live on a big planet, we can all do things to make life better for someone else. Unfortunately, you can't control other people, but you can do your part in making change.

Hopefully it's contagious.

What are your rules to live by?

  1. Oh this is BRILLIANT!!!! Thank you for sharing it. I love "walk in, dance out" but "don't be a dick" is a motto to live by. I think it's hard in relationships to not neglect the other person when you are busy managing kids, work and day to day life. I'm certainly working on this one. Bron x

  5. Straight to the point: Don't be a dick! Love it! And I hadn't read that Regina Brett post, but now I have. Some very good points there, too. Thanks for sharing. xo

  6. Simple but says it all really, doesn't it. I wonder if Jesus were alive today, instead of saying "do unto others ..." if He would say "don't be a dick"!!! Kinda means the same thing I reckon!

  11. "Don't be a dick" would make a great bumper sticker. We have some similar ones here in SA in relation to the road rules. Like the one that says Don't be a *picture of a rooster* for example.

  12. Oh there are so many people I'd love to say that to 'Don't be a Dick'. It can sometimes be exhausting trying to be a kind person only to have 'dicks' make you feel like crap.

  16. That is a great rule to live by and I wish more people would do it. I'm a strong believer in not making judgement until you walk in the other person's shoes.

  20. Don't be a dick covers most situations! My fave bit of wisdom is "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". Tackle HUGE projects or problems by doing the very first small thing.

    1. I like the Martin Luther King variation of that - you don't have to know where the staircase leads, you just have to take the first step

  21. Simple but sums everything up perfectly really. I'm afraid I can't seem to narrow my motto down, being a sucker for inspirational quotes lots of words speak to me.
