"The pigeon is, if not actually sacred, at least highly respected in Venice." Jan Morris

While I'm not sure if it holds true today, as there were a lot less in the Piaza than when I was there in the 90s, this bird seemed keen to join me in at sunset, and the lid on the nuts seems to imply he's a regular.

My friend had given me some Euro for Xmas so I could have a cocktail on our trip - I'd decided on the Danieli but alas Four Seasons has taken over and were doing renovations, so our roof top bar at Palazzo Cannova fit the bill. My husband was joining me in a while, so the bird felt no qualms about approaching me.

As the sun went down, other tables populated and the pigeon tried his luck elsewhere.

  3. A wildlife rehab rehabilitation center just took in over 300 pigeons that were removed due to a hoarding situation. People have such a negative view of them and it’s a shame because they’re really smart birds. They remember people…… I am looking back on old Nature Notes To refresh my memory, and I see all of the people that have been lost over the years sadly. In the beginning, it was such a small close community and now everything has moved to other social media platforms…Michelle

    1. Yes, I've lost a few in my circle and it's so sad and a shock, and then also soooooo many of the regulars chucked it in.

  6. Such fun photos of the Venetian rooftop bar pigeon! He would have loved the nuts in that jar if it did not have a lid! :)
I also have memories of standing in front of Saint Marks Basilica and being surrounded by a flock of pigeons
