First of the Month Fiction - Australia Day edition

This month as flown, and pretty soon I'll be full time blogging again. No excuses.

Rules are here. Write a story in exactly 100 words, or less than 30. Put it in comments, add link to your own blog so we can see your work in unrestricted glory.

The divorce had left him scarred. He looked at his loyal friends. "Happy Australia Day!" he toasted, raising his beer to the sunshine. Things were finally looking up.

Just a less than 30 words one for me this time.

Here's to a wonderful year of the Horse, everybody!

Linking up with Jess for IBOT and with Ms Mystery Case and A Cooker and A Looker.

  1. I couldn't say anything in 30 words - I don't think !!!!!! Well nothing that would make sense !
I LOVE what you do on the first of the month (even though you were just a little late this month !)
Have a great last week with your children !

  2. I'm the one that fails at wordless Wednesday. I'm not sure how I would go in 100 words or less.

  3. I can just picture that scenario! Wonder how many of those scenarios will be playing out Sunday! ;-) Well written! I will give this a go later, but I'm not much of a fiction writer.

  5. Jess was confused; but this was not all that unusual for her these days. She was sure, last time she had checked, that the end of the month was still ten days away, but the blog she was visiting suggested otherwise.
Stressing for a moment, that perhaps the end of the month had come and gone, and her children had missed their first day of school, she zoomed through the comment section for further information. Thankfully, the author reassured her that the date was right. The month had not ended, she was just being super organised.

Jess breathed a sigh of relief, and sank back in to the chair. She wasn't completely mental.
The scare had taken it's toll however, and all her creativity went out the window, making an inventive short story an impossible task.
So she just wrote this instead. :)

And didn't count it. Don't tell Lydia ;)

    1. As I am flexible in the dates, I'll also be flexible in the word count. That's hilarious!! My inlinkz renewal is falling at an untimely junction this month - I'll be at a sport and rec camp, possibly without phone coverage...so figured this was safer.
Anyway, it prompted a wonderful story which made me grin from ear to ear...I'm a muse (of sorts) ;)

  6. The little boy was frozen in place, the only movement he made was the regular involuntary frightened knee jerk reaction his entire body made each time the older boy squealed in his face.

    (Woo hoo! I did it!)

  7. Short and sweet! As a journo we were taught that intros should be no more than 30 words. You can actually say a lot in just 30 words. x

    1. I find 30 words very hard. I like the 100 exactly...it's easier to play around adding or taking out adjectives...

  8. I'm having a go at 30 words this time:

She lay in bed her eyes skimming over the words, sometimes lingering allowing the words string together in the sentence, sometimes not. Pause more, think less. The year had started.

    Love your linky xx

  9. She closed her eyes, putting her hands over her ears. She wanted to block it all out. Tomorrow would be better, she would make it so.

I love reading your first of the month fictions and then stretching my brain to try to fit into the constraints. It's certainly harder than it looks!

  11. Jack dug his hole like there was no tomorrow. It shouldn’t have come to this. But he had to bury the evidence so he could receive his welfare benefit.

  12. There it was, the coat of arms, the symbol of hope. The boat journey had taken them from her. But now Australia was hers to grab onto.

  13. You're so clever with this Lydia. I struggle to keep my social media posts to thirty words! Thanks for linking up with the Australia Day Party.

  14. Oh goodness... 100 words or less, let alone 30, I don't think I could do it. Does-it-count-as-one-word-if-you-just-run-them-all-together-like-this? Ha!
