Outgrowing Holidays

This weekend we booked our trip to Currawong. We used to go en masse - about 40 of us, annually, but this year, with the HSC and having booked a year in advance, I just forgot about it. So it was just us, and a couple of friends. Some friends came for lunch on the Saturday, but basically, instead of a hoard of children, it was all adult friends.

We played tennis and golf and lazed on the beach.

The kids had fun and most of all, it was very easy and relaxing.

I had been thinking whether we'd come to the end of the road with these places, now that the older kids would not want to come. However, the place is so beautiful and the forced relaxation because there's nothing to do (no tv, no work, no sights to see), it is quite cathartic these days.

You avoid the traffic 'getting out of Sydney' and after the boat ride, are only an hour from home, yet you feel a world away.

Sometimes you don't outgrow a place, the place evolves to your needs.

Have you changed your holidays as the kids grew up? Do you miss what you used to do?

Further reading on Currawong and here. Currawong is in Sydney, but accessible only by boat (or lengthy bush walk).

  1. What a gem of a place even though I had to google it! Even though we don't have kids, I've noticed our holidays changing as we get older, like you said the places we go don't change but what we do there changes to suit our needs. I'm sure one day you'll be back at Currawong with three generations (grandchildren included!) won't that be something to look forward to?!

    1. Our eldest was on her own holiday to Thailand - so that in itself was weird...(being one person down in the family)

  6. Sydney has so many hidden gems. I never thought I could live there, but after 8 years there it was really hard to leave.

  7. That sounds like a nice, peaceful little holiday. I like how you put it -- sometimes a place evolves to your needs. Indeed. :)

  8. If you love a place, why stop going? My kids are little so I can only dream of a holiday without them!

  9. We haven't had this as an issue with the kids but I totally know what you mean because of my childhood and the holidays we used to have when I was kid that eventually stopped as everyone got older. I'm actually wanting to start taking the girls on holidays to the same place we used to go as kids because I think they would love it, and I love a holiday where the only obligation is the beach or fishing!

  10. Sometimes a vacation means leaving responsibilities and relaxing in a new environment. I would love to go on holiday here. Gorgeous!

  12. I certainly know of Currawong and how it became there and so glad to see you all enjoying it. There is a bittersweet time right now...and a new way in which you and your family will be getting together or not. But we raise kids for them to leave don't we? Making new memories is helpful. I am, finally, doing that for Christmas. Denyse #teamIBOT

  13. Wow looks a beaut! It's my sort of Aussie place. We find that as long as we are paying the kids will still come on holiday with us... is that bribery?!

  14. Looks like the perfect beach for relaxing. Sometimes I enjoy just my hubby and I and the quiet, and other times I revel in the chaos of kids running around. A balance is nice.

  15. What a beautiful place for a getaway. I expect holidays do change as the little ones get older, but that's what makes holidays exciting.. having some tradition, but lots of new places to explore. And perhaps a more grown up company too. Thanks for joining us for the #dreamteam xx

  16. This looks like such a beautiful and peaceful retreat. We don't have kids but I always wonder what travel would be like if we did. I suspect it would definitely change. ;) - Sara

  17. To be honest the only child friendly holiday we go on is Disneyland and I'd still do that once they're all grown up!!! #KCACOLS

  18. Well happy holidays :) I know what you mean about holidays changing as time goes on. I'm still in the younger generation in my family but I've definitely noticed how holiday traditions have evolved as we've gotten older, moved, gotten partners, etc. It's bittersweet, isn't it?

  19. I love how you say that the place evolves with you. We've got family friends who we all used to meet up with and incidentally, we met on holiday. As we've grown up, it's only the parents who meet up. #kcacols

  20. A wonderful destination, Lydia. We have such beautiful places in Australia, I find it surprising that people want to go overseas before exploring our own back yard first.

  21. Wow, such a beautiful place, can see why the kids can probably never outgrow it. Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next time.

  22. We tend to have holidays where we pack so much in and do EVERY tourist attraction. I think when we are older the children will want to do less of that :( Thanks for linking up with #stayclassymama

  24. This looks like a beautiful place. Such wonderful pictures. My kids are still young, but I have thought of the same thing too. What things will change as they get older? Trips? Vacations? Traditions? #KCACOLS
