Some of you will remember First of the Month Fiction (61 little stories of 100 words or less, that now sit on my blog in a linky up that ground to an abrupt halt in 2017). When my Dad got sick, I just lost my mojo and I've not written a story since. It wasn't intentional, I just didn't have any inspiration.
The Grieve short story competition ended today, and at 5pm I decided I should 'whip something up' to enter it. As you do, when you haven't written for 18 months. I've been published in that anthology about three times, so if I'm going to try to get writing again, that seemed like a comfortable starting point.
I scribbled away for a bit, then typed and edited and rewrote and submitted. Just like that. I may not make the finals this time, but it felt good. I liked my character and she hung around for a bit as I went into the kitchen to make dinner.
I had a happy buzz I've not felt in quite some time. I hope some of my nastier characters come out of the shadows and ask to tell their stories. I do like those wicked people so much...as long time contributers may remember. I feel they're just hiding in the attic rather than left for good.
While I'm not ready to commit to the First of the Month Fiction just yet, I am keen to write another story. I like that I'm keen.
So for this week, I am loving that sometimes writers block goes away for no reason. I'm loving that I may've turned a corner. And I'm loving feeling buzzy, even though I have a sore throat and may be getting sick...
Sometimes from the pen comes small mercies.

I love how inspiration strikes at ridiculous times. I'm reading this in the Met Centre while I have a coffee and blow my nose for the millionth time in the last 24 hours but had to sit down so I could quickly write the idea that came to me on the bus before I forgot it. Here's to some of those wicked characters of yours raising their voices.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy for you that you're keen to write another story. #lovin'lifelinky
ReplyDeleteWhat a great feeling it is when you turn a corner or feel yourself emerging from a slump or feel a shift for the better in your mood and when inspiration and/or creativity strikes out of nowhere. I hope it continues for you and we get a glimpse of some of t hose wicked characters you speak of! lol #TeamLovinLife
ReplyDeleteI'm always so envious of people who have characters and stories in their heads that are just waiting to be discovered. I don't have that - just my blogging - but that makes me happy too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great feeling. I continue to bookmark writing comps and courses etc that I think I'll come back to and by the time I open them again they've closed. I guess IF I really wanted to do it I would.
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad inspiration struck for you!
I have been doing that for about 18 months. Thinking if I'll enter a comp then I'll write something but then not bothering to even try. So I hear you. Last week I even thought I'd dig out something old and try and 'fix' it up but I apparently deleted that file of just didn't work stories.
DeleteSo glad to hear that you started writing again. It is a great feeling when you push yourself to restart something that makes your happy.
