“I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house." ― Nathaniel Hawthorne,

This autumn is strange. It's freezing and then there are bursts of warm sunshine. I've been resting outside on the deck, lying on the warm planks, trying to cook this stupid virus out of me (you know I'm not a doctor, right? This is not medical advice, it's just something I'm doing that can't hurt...) So I have been revelling in the warm rays when they're around. But then other days I'm bundled up with scarfs and wearing my hoodie!

So watching leaves change colour but pretending summer hasn't quite left when I can....

The grey clouds have rolled in but carrying little rain - so the sun paints the clouds a myriad of colours, as if replicating the leaves....

The sun is setting much earlier so my afternoon dog walk is often greeted with a firey blaze when I turn the corner...

When the kids were little, we would trek up to the Blue Mountains for an autumn weekend, to cozy by the fire and tramp about the gardens with red and orange leaves. I saw this quote and felt it's truth - I associate little with the season but much with the explosion of colour in the leaves and the crisp chill...

"“There is something incredibly nostalgic and significant about the annual cascade of autumn leaves.”

― Joe L. Wheeler

Do you have memories anchored in Autumn?

  1. Dear Lydia, I wish you a speedy recovery! It's so strange to read that it's autumn for you now and winter is just around the corner. At the moment we are so happy about the warm summer sun and the many flowers. And I hate to think that the summer solstice will soon be upon us again.
Warm greetings and thank you for your participation in Nature Thursday.

  2. Chaplin: "Ooh, autumn is fire season here, and we remember that time in 2017 when we ran away from the Lilac Fire and go stay with friends in a safer place."
Charlee: "That was quite the adventure!"
Chaplin: "The autumn after that was when our brother Dennis left for the Rainbow Bridge."
    Charlee: "That was sad."
Lulu: "And it was the autumn after that when Dada had to go to the hospital for a while."
    Charlee: "That was scary!"
Java Bean: "So how come in spite of all that autumn is Dada's favorite time of year?"
Charlee: "I think it has something to do with Octobers when they used to live in New York, and possibly also Halloween ..."

    1. That's really interesting - the hook of enjopyment (Halloween and NY Octobers) is wired in and overrides the recent adversity. Human brains are so fascinating.

  3. Lydia, I do hope you begin to feel better. I think you may be onto something by baking the virus out in the sunshine when it's available. Sounds like a good idea to me and you're right; it can't hurt. I love your photos.

  6. Hi Lydia, I love Autumn especially the foliage although in Queensland where I live we don't see that much change unless you go to the Hinterland. The sunsets have been stunning lately. We are off on our cruise to PNG so it will be a tad warmer LOL :) #WWandP

  8. Hi Lydia - I hope the virus cooking works - if not, it still would have been lovely lying on the warm deck. Autumn here has been gorgeous - clear cold-ish days with beautiful blue skies......until June arrived and the rain set in. It's been cold enough that we even scored some hail the other night. Loved your quotes.

  10. Seeking the light and warmth and self-directed healing..I reckon we know what our bodies want and you are looking after yourself well. I get a bit sad at the early sunset but I also know that we are only 12 days away from the shortest days...and slowly the light will stay longer...and longer.... Great to see you sharing a post from your blog on this week’s Wednesday’s Words and Pics Link Up. I hope to see you next week too. Warm wishes, Denyse.

  13. Autumn is my favorite time of the year. I love the variable weather, the low sun, the leaves changing color, and the snakes and spiders going away.

  14. A dreamy and very beautiful sky view.
The palm tree in the background seems huge?
Its leaves do not fall, it defies the seasons.

  15. I do love Autumn as long as we still have a couple of warm days a week so I can get the washing dried on the line.
