Little Loves - September

READ
Longtime bloggers in the Australian bloggosphere will remember her, and her #SunsetsforKate, but Kate Morrell wrote this beautiful Insta post that I want to share with you. I think she raises a lot of important things to think about but I also just loved the line "Who is this girl? What a joy to feel so free". I too have been remembering some early 20's solo trips and I can't believe the stuff I did. The faith I had in humanity (and probably very lucky on personal safety). I just radiated happiness and delight in the European beauty that complete strangers would talk to me and show me hidden treasure as I walked the streets, they'd give me addresses of Mask makers in Venice who would welcome me into their homes and workshops to see their art (even I had pause when I found myself in the lounge room of an old artisan, struggling with Italian and explaining that some shop owner had sent me...but it was all fine and he was flattered by his reputation as the best mask maker in the city). Experience and age wears us down. We become more cautious (or less stupid). There is something strange about the naive youth we once were.

Not a great photo but love the ghost bird

WATCHED  I went to Garry Starr:Classic Penguins at Grand Electric. It is EXCELLENT! I laughed so hard and it is so clever and entertaining as he works through 100 Penguin classics (the Communist Manifesto was my favourite). I am also in awe of the person who joined in for the Jungle book. I am envious of such confidence and self assurance. Anyway, without giving anything away, you must get to Grand Electric by October 12 if you can. It's so good. I went with 10 people and we all loved it. Tickets are here. People in London, he'll be hitting the West End in Nov/Dec so keep an eye out!

At the cinema, I watched Inter Alia. While I don't normally watch filmed theatre productions, this is well worth it. Meaty play, incredibly difficult and clever, and stunning performance by Rosamund Pike. She's extraordinary. It's the new Suzy Miller play (of Prima Facie fame). Again I can't really talk about it without spoiling so just check it out if you can.

Delectable crab tart at Midden

HEARD I stumbled across this song by accident but I just love it! It's about finding hope and joy and it really lifts my spirits.

WORE My new clogs turned up. I've been wearing them around the house with socks to wear them in, as the leather is a little scratchy until it's been worn a bit. These match my gold ones I got a few years ago. These are my new heels now that it appears I can't wear heels anymore for any length of time.

AND LASTLY The first two weeks of the month were hindered by medical issues and recovery but then I've hit the ground running. The highlights? Definitely the Underground film festival, with a smellorama film and Movie Bingo - both films, UHF and Living in Oblivion are still very funny and worth watching.

Who knew watching movies could be so fun!?!

Pigeon Fool was an extraordinary highlight but deserves a separate post when I get a chance.

I've mentioned some of the plays and gigs I've been to, so I'll go with Genesis Owusu at the Opera House, just so I can share the pictures, and state yet again I have no idea how this song didn't make the Hottest Australian 100. Off to Cyril tonight and a talk by Ivan Coyote, a brilliant author and performer and a beach weekend away so my Insta will be flooded shortly. Also got more fringe comedy (already saw Brodi Snook) on the weekend...so all in all, a great month!

  1. I love that bridge photo. I was absolutely exhausted after reading your post - you take full advantage of what Sydney offers. You'd be so bored living where I do!

  2. I agree with Alana, I love the bridge photo - fabulous job! You are one busy gal. Whew, I'm ready for a nap after reading about your many adventures. I nodded my head to your statement how with age we grow more cautious or less stupid and it might just be a little of both. I'm very guarded. It's almost like a shell shock when I see younger people taking everything for granted, especially their safety. Thanks for sharing your life with us and music picks. Have a boogietastic week, Lydia!

  3. Wow, great post! So many cool things about it: the pictures are fabulous, loved both music videos (I can see why The Glen lifts your spirits -- did the same for me. Good lyrics. Get Inspired is definitely earworm-worthy!)...and I really enjoyed hearing about all your adventures!
I'm a movie-goer too. I LOVE going to see movies at the theaters -- the whole "Big Screen" experience, the sound and the smells of popcorn... it's just perfection, imo. I used to go to movies all the time. Several times a month, sometimes a few times a week depending on what was showing at the time. Covid sure changed all that. But I recently went to see the new Jurassic film at a 4D theater -- my first time at a 4D theater. It was so cool and so fun! The 4D experience was perfect for this particular film: the seats moved and rocked when the dinosaurs would be walking and the sound was incredible. The seats even had seat-belts to strap in! I mean these seats really bounced us around with all those big dinosaurs strolling and stalking. There was also a water-feature that you could choose to have On or Off with a control on the arm of the seat... so when there was an ocean scene and the waves were crashing, water would mist out and cover you. Unfortunately the water feature didn't work so that was disappointing (but I called the manager the next day and he put some free tickets on my account and asked which seats we sat in so he could go fix the problem. Regal rocks). Anyway, your comment about not knowing that going to movies could be so fun resonated with me. I find it fun whether I go with friends or go alone.

Finally: the clogs!!! Omg, I used to wear these high black clogs and go out dancing all the time. I miss those shoes but know there's no way I could ever wear those heels these days! I can't even wear a kitten heel! I'm strictly Crocs and Skechers sneakers nowadays!

Oh, I also really liked your comment about how naive we are when we're young. " We become more cautious (or less stupid)." So true!
I can't believe the things I used to do and I'm amazed that I've made it to age 63! I find myself fearful nowadays: fearful of walking around at night, suspicious and cautious when I see a group of teenagers walking down the road at night, wondering if they're up to no good, out to break into cars or do property damage...and then I stop and think My God, that was me and my friends decades ago and we were simply walking the neighborhood, hanging out, talking, laughing, smoking joints. Ay-yi-yi, I've become so cynical in my old age!

Anyway, awesome post. I'm happy to be back to blogging and look forward to reading more of your posts. Have a great week.

  6. HI Lydia, yes I know of Kate Morell. I never had the freedom she (& you) had at that age. I never had overseas travel back then. I was married at 20 and had my twins at 28 and worked saving money. However, I was a lot free'er within myself to be me without fear of judgement back then! I could dance without self consciousness. This is the saddest thing I find about getting older for myself at least. I've lost the ability to let loose and be free in a way I used to, without fear of judgement. So glad to hear your medical issues have improved! Yes to that! Thanks for linking up with us at #WWWhimsy xo

  7. What a fascinating post. I loved all the photos of the Sydney Opera House. It could be the 8th wonder of the modern world! The photo from the bridge is marvelous and I love that it included a drink for T, too.

When I was young, I did a lot more things, some probably stupid, than I do now. In a way, I'd love to have that self confidence and self assurance I had back then. Now I feel like I'm a stiff bore.

I could never wear those shoes. I need something to surround my feet, like my Reebox. Lucky you.

Your crab tart looks delicious and you paired it with another drink you shared with us for T this Tuesday, too, dear Lydia.

  8. I always learn so much from your posts. I read and enjoyed the Kate Morrell Insta post. And I'll definitely look out for Garry Starr. Love the colour of those clogs. Hope you are feeling better. Thanks for linking at #TuesdayTwirl

  9. Clogs! They were such a thing when I grew up. I had a pair of red ones with kurbits decor (it's a special style of art/decor from the region where I grew up). But I can't imagine wearing such a thing now, I want shoes to cling to my feet and I definitely wouldn't touch anything with heels.

I did a lot of risky things when I was young. Perhaps I've come back to some of that attitude (but less of the naivety) in recent years but oh, how fearless I was in my 20s.

  10. As usual, you've been up to so many interesting things, Lydia. And I love the purple clogs!

  11. I don't even think I could handle the heels on those clogs! It sounds like you have packed a whole lot of fun into September.
