Ikea - lost in translation


Today's activity for the wordsmiths:

I'm after some new words for the following:
‎1. A word for that overwhelming dazed feeling you get walking round Ikea (just look at the people around you, they all have it).
 ‎2. A word for that miserable level of unhappiness that couples get at Ikea (no one needs to do that shopping in pairs - if I can buy a bed all by myself with my muppet arms, I think it would be far safer for the wellbeing of the relationship if one person went - the reward for having to trawl through Ikea with all the other dazed and unhappy people is that you get to pick the furniture) Next time, look at the couples...it's tragic.
 ‎3. A word for falling victim to buying crap you never set out to get and probably don't need. Has anyone ever gone to Ikea and just got what they went for? I went for batteries and got a dragon and a doona cover...
4. A word for consistently forgetting to take the recycled batteries back to be recycled, even though that was the purpose of the visit...

Now I just want to clarify, anyone with children should love Ikea, for cheap affordable necessities, toys and even food. They are green and stylish but those words and descriptions already exist...(is that enough to stave off a lawsuit?)
I'll finish with a quote from my wee girl as we walk over from the car park "Oh this place?! I LOVE this place!"

(oh, but I just have to add that the dragon was an absolute steal with their family discount card...)

    Good old IKEA - for us it is like Bunnings - eventually we had to ban ourselves from both shops because we went there and ALWAYS came home with stuff we never knew we needed, thought it would be great to have, but once home often never used it !!! Just for fun we used to take bets on how much we would spend before we went into the shop.

    I've only been to IKEA once for all those reasons! It is so easy to get sucked into the whole 'vibe'. It all seems so cheap and shiny and necessary. BTW, how's your dragon going?

    I try to avoid Ikea at all costs. I instantly need one of everything in there that I wouldn't have previously needed :)

    I love IKEA, but only get to go once every few years as there isn't one near us. I could spend a weekend in there, quite easily. That said, I have no small children anymore, but the one time we did take little kids to IKEA has left memories that even now can make me break out in hives.

    I enjoy an Ikea visit, but they are too far away to visit very often. I lost my 2yo there one time. But we found her again, so you know, swings and roundabouts.
    With the new house having NO STORAGE WHATSOEVER we will be visiting again soon for cheap shelving. I agree that it would be way more fun for me to go and do the choosing by myself without having to negotiate styles with husband (with added whinging from children).

    I actually started going to Ikea when the kids were younger...because they had childmindingdownstairs! I could drop them to play, have a quick quiet cuppa, then start to look at what you came to buy.
    I wasn't the only one who did that - if you didn't turn up for your kids after their 1 hour limit they'd page you through the store :) Too funny, always knew when friends were in the store that way!

    Perhaps the word you are after is "Ikkiness"?

    Or "misplaced Ikealism"?

    I've never been to Ikea but the storage lover in me has spent hours going through the website. If only the delivered further than metro areas..

    Oooh I love this! I'm thinking 'shoma' (shopping coma), and No 3. is obviously 'accidental meatballery' as in, 'I went to Ikea and was accidentally meatballed' when you come home with a dishbrush that sticks to the wall instead of a floor rug (oh.. and a 1kg bag of those DELICIOUS meatballs... ;)

    I have never been into an Ikea. Not once.

    Bunnings is a different story though, I'm one of those, get lost and discovered days later in a daze staring at items I don't need and will never use kind of blokes

    Oh man, Ikea with a hangover...don't do it. Then I lost my kid. It was your worst nightmare.

    I was watching this documentary about how reindeer migrate, and one day they have to decide, as a herd, to swim across the freezing Arctic. They take the plunge, then go. It's a desperate lemming-like sight. If one of the young ones turns back, it can mean the whole herd can turn back, or go the wrong way, and the whole herd not make it, and drown. Ikea reminds me of this.

    Still love this first post Lydia - I think the word we are all looking for is hoodwinked, when it comes to IKEA. I love the products and the idea of the place but I do loathe the reality of queues, flatpacks and marriage counselling when it all goes inevitably wrong!!!

    I haven't been to Ikea for ages, but I love that you were so frustrated by them it drove you to blogging! There's supposed to be one opening up near us in North Brisbane soon and it's like the hottest bit of contentious gossip - so much anticipation! I think the word you're looking for is quite simply 'Ikea'!
