What I don't get about the internet (Variation on things I don't get cos I'm old)

1. That a porn star would need to go on Mixxxer to find casual sex? I find that so weird. (Did anyone else see that article? I suspect it's just bait to lure all the non pornstar men onto the app, on the off chance they get to make it with a porn star).

2. I don't get Mixxxer or Tinder or any of those - but I'm old and conservative. If it makes the dating sites more about people wanting a relationship, then I guess that's a good thing?

3. That I can write a post where I use euphemisms to describe hideous body distorting breast implants and get a lot of hits from the non English speaking world (obviously looking for porn) but when I write about Vagina Cakes, using the word vagina repeatedly, none of the pervy trolling I feared appeared. Obviously the word vagina is not sexy.

4. Notice how many things with the internet have to do with porn, even if you aren't a porn person? Type in anything and something you don't want to see will turn up. What did all the porn fans do before the internet? Or did the world's obsession with all things naked and sexual grow with the internet?

5. Why do the porn people track me down on Twitter - I'm a chick, an old chick at that, I don't want to look at your "sexy pics" or see celebrity blah naked...

6. Why is the internet going mad over the fact that a reality tv show contestant was just in it for the fame?

7. Why do people have opinions on your profile pic? You change it too much, you need to change it, it shouldn't be of you as a couple, it SHOULD be of you as a couple, it shouldn't be of your kids, why isn't it of your kids and so on...(You see it the most, do what suits you!)

8. How easily misconstrued what you write on Facebook can be. A lot of things read flirty/sleazy/aggressive/sarcastic when they may not be intended that way. Sometimes I notice what I wrote reads snarkily or sarcastic, when in fact I am actually asking the question.

9. My news page that opens when I start my computer is becoming more like a tabloid each day, or a TV show review page...How do I get the real news again?

10. I grew up without the internet. Can you imagine going back? On the flipside, as it's such a time stealer, can you imagine how efficient you'd be with all the extra time you'd suddenly have?

  1. Wow, not sure where to start with this! I kind of agree about Tindr etc (speaking from a position of NO experience) that hopefully they leave the 'real' dating sites for the 'real' daters. I don't think I'd cope well in an Internet-free world nowadays. Obviously there's plenty to loathe about it, but the sense of connection to the world outweighs the negs for me (at the moment anyway...)

  2. I can't imagine going back but I've really been enjoying my social media free stints. It's amazing how much you can achieve when you don't have the distractions.

  3. Gosh I feel positively fossil. I hadn't even heard of Mixxxer. Old, conservative and two young kids here, it's enough to keep me out of trouble. LOL. I get my iliicit thrill from Bachelor scandals (disclaimer: did not watch show. just like scandal).

  4. Another old fossil here - while I've heard of Tinder, I've not heard of Mixxxer. I know people who have met through online dating sites and are in solid relationships but I'm not sure I could do it. I've always said if anything happens to A I don't know if I could go back to the whole trying to find another partner thing - I just don't think I could be bothered !!!!!
I've had a couple of posts that I've clicked on and some nude woman has popped up on the screen - how this has happened, I have no idea but I don't go back to find out either.
I totally hear you on the tone of messages etc on social media - it's very hard to convey the right tone and I am often left wondering whether I got it right or not. The difficult thing is that I have connected with a lot of people who don't know me IRL, so they don't really know how I speak which, for people who know me, makes a difference to how they read my posts (well I think they do because I know I do when I am reading a post by someone I know IRL compared to someone I don't know).
Thanks for asking the hard questions again and getting me thinking about where we would be and how I would spend my time if I didn't have the internet !!!
    Have the best weekend !

  6. What the hell is Mixxxer? You are a lot more up to speed than I am ;-) I get you completely especially on the where can we get real news now. It's disappearing fast. Although I do like a good Bachelor scandal. My life is obviously not very exciting!

  7. I just want to say, so you don't think I'm some sort of old perv (not that there's anything wrong with that), I only know of Mixxxer because a 'news' story on it appeared in my FB feed....see what I was saying about 'News'?

  8. What exactly did we used to before the internet anyway? Yes vagina isn't really a sexy word.

  9. I heard of tinder for the first time the other day - definitely not alone in that regards.

  10. I have to say I really hope you don't get lots of creepy spam from this! And you get the real news by going to bed at 7.30pm (QLD time) and watching it, and various other ABC or SBS channels until 10pm or until you feel depressed or overwhelmed! Welcome to my world of boring!

  11. My partner is in his 50's and has all these porn mags from the 80's. There's whole sections in there for personals and people actually sent in nudes. So I'm guessing that's what they did before the internet lol.

  12. I'm wondering why the porn people aren't tracking me down now. Am I missing out on something?

  13. People have opinions on your profile picture pic? Man e dry one has an opinion on everything don't they?
I read somewhere the average child comes into contact with porn at 8 years old. Not surprising really when even googling something innocent can be dangerous.

  14. I love number 3 - hmmmm yes I guess you are right the word is not sexy. What I don't get about the internet is those GOMI people and the like.... I am part of a couple of facebook groups for my suburb and every now and then people go feral - calling each other names and insulting each other. Just because you are behind computer screens people doesn't mean the basic rules of human decency don't apply!!!

  15. I detest the suggestions that appear when you try the most ordinary of searches - especially when you have kids!

  16. Can't live with it, cam't live without it. :)

  17. I don't know what/or how to use Mixxxer or Tinder!! Guess that shows my age!
I reckon that there will be a time when a baby is born and you are handed a computer to go home with the sweet little one :)
There seems to be more inter-woven offline world with the online world, where people have to be online when they are out n about!!

  18. I'm not old or conservative but I don't get Tinder either. Then again, maybe 30 is old for Tinder! :P I'd never heard of Mixer. I didn't have internet till 16. Seems weird to think we lived without it for all those years. As for decent news, I access the ABC website for the less tabloid-style news.

  19. YES that profile photo thing - how stupid and embarrassing that everyone sees and comments when you do it! x

  20. I like watching the news but don't get the chance very often at all. I'd agree the ABC has no nonsense news.

  21. Wow I agree with your porn issues ... what is with it being everywhere and what is with the emails. I think I would accomplish so much more without the internet but I love the convenience for communicating, especially with family and being so far from them.

  22. I will never understand the internet!!
