Anzac Day

April 25th is Anzac Day, the national day of Remembrance in Australia for those who served and died in all wars and conflicts (or peace keeping missions).

The Ode to Remembrance, which is part of all services on Anzac day is part of a poem called For the Fallen, written by Laurence Binyon in 1914. The English poet worked as a medical orderly with the Red Cross on the Western Front. The poem was published in the newspaper in September, which shows you how much death & horror Binyon had seen in the first month of war. (WWI started July 28). For some reason that makes it all the more sadder to me.

Lest we forget.

  1. Hello Lydia,
until now I didn't know anything about Anzac Day!

Unfortunately I only have “Summer in Singapore” to offer and not the current seasonal stuff from Austria. It was supposed to be spring here, but (after we returned from our journey) we initially had summer with almost 30 degrees Celsius... and then within a few days it cooled down to winter with 4 degrees! Maybe spring will come next week...

I hope you accept my link, if not, just throw it out!
    All the best, Traude

    1. I did. Anzac day is a public holiday here. It's a big deal with dawn services etc. Then everyone goes to the pub and plays 2 up, a gambling game they played in the trenches which is only legal on Anzac Day....

  5. Thank God for those willing to serve, but I am so tired of wars. If only we'd learn to negotiate.

  6. You've reminded me of my visit to Anzac Cove in Turkey with its cemeteries, battlefields and trenches.
