Astonishment

I was flicking through facebook and came across this on the Codeblack Life page:
When was the last time you astonished yourself?

It alarms me, that I've never astonished myself. Ever.

I've done things I'm proud of, but never actually been astonished by it.

I put it up to my friends on FB, and the only offerings returned was that one person astonished themselves at the age of 45 by losing their "childbearing hips" that they "would always have" through running and diet. Another astonished herself that she made the Masterchef  4 tiered cake and it looked perfect and was edible....That was it. I got a number of likes, so I suspect others were like me, and could not think of a single example. Astonished by others, and that's not always in a positive way, but never really by our own actions.

So while this goes onto the list, and may take some time to fulfil, I'm asking you, when was the last time you astonished yourself, and what was it?

  1. I don't think I've ever astonished myself either. I've been disappointed in myself a lot though. I'd love to lose my child-bearing hips... perhaps I should set that as a goal!

    1. Nah, just listen to hip hop and then you're great, just the way you are...that's my motto.

  2. I remember being astonished when I finished my plumbing apprenticeship. Maybe it doesn't need to be a huge achievement to be astonished with oneself...I'm going to think on this a bit more. :)

    1. it doesn't need to be big, but it does need to astonish...and that's the bit for me, which is a little sad. I want that.

  3. I'm a bit nervous about "astonishing myself". Would be content with Impress Myself or Wildly Entertain Myself...but I'm a bit too conservative for my own good!

Great post to get one to think 'outside the box' ;)

  4. I definitely astonished myself after I gave birth to my son. I never in a million years realised that I could give birth to a baby with nothing but gas.

    1. I was just thinking the same thing - I was astonished that a wussy like me was able to give birth twice(!) with no drugs (gas doesn't count as it was useless).

  5. Falling pregnant during the 1st round of IVF - but I really cant take all the credit for that. I was again completely astonished when I later fell pregnant naturally with P2. Unfortunately I cant claim all the credit for that one either.
I once topped the state in a law exam - still cant work out how I managed that one.

  6. I have to say that after 11 years, I'm still astonished that I made a human! Yeah, I know it's been done before, but I still think I'm pretty clever :)

    1. It is sad, isn't it? I makes me sad. Though a friend suggested that I have done a lot of things that I should be astonished that I would do, but because of my personality, I expect the outcome. I'm pondering this one....

  9. I astonished myself when I ran a half marathon. I honestly didn't think I'd ever do one. Lo and behold, I'm off to do my second next week!

  10. Can't say I have ever thought about this, I probably have but would need to give it some thought :)

  11. Hmmm...astonished...you probably need to change the actual word to a more regular word to find an example of being 'astonished.' Does that make sense?!
I have been astonished plenty of times by other people but that is never a good thing as you've said. No, if I have done anything remotely astonishing, I would have been fearful but fully expected it of myself anyway - so no, can't say I have astonished myself. An interesting blog post and I have enjoyed the thoughts!

  12. What a great goal. to astonish yourself! Good luck :)
I remember eating some astonishing stuff I've cooked before. Sometimes we are too hard on ourselves, too critical. We do astonishing stuff all the time, but don't pat ourselves on the back enough. Some of the things you've already done on that list are pretty astonishing :D
