Read This poem again. I went to A Complete Unknown and spent the first half of the movie trying to remember the words to a poem I loved. It had a profound impact on me at about 18. It really sums up the existential experience in a less terrifying way than Sartre's Le Mur or La Nausee. I was genuinely surprised it was written by Dylan - I had no idea though it made a lot of sense when you see the movie. Interestingly I thought it ended with sunrise not sundown. I feel sunrise is more optimistic though sundown is more Dylanesque. Last Thoughts on Woody Gutherie.
Heard I think we'll be hearing a lot more songs of resistance. "You stand up for me, I stand for you". or the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Join forces and your numbers swell. The causes are different but the goal is the same.
Watched Nia Archives really belt out a storm. Just fabulous. Her set was and hour 15 and I jumped (quite literally) for 7kms. It was manic. She was great. The crowd was great. Just loved it.
On TV we're watching The Agency. We didn't watch the Bureau so it's all new to us. Worth a watch.
Made plans. Diary is getting crazy already. And already double booked myself. Got to get it under control.
Wore The Squid Game earrings, perfect for red light/green light.
And Lastly We have a completely blank long weekend. Hoping to not waste it all.

Hi Lydia thanks for sharing what you've been listening to and watching. I can't remember any poems although I do love 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud' by Wordsworth. I think you are right about resistance and I'm sure it will increase not just in songs but other areas in life. Like you, my diary is crazy and it isn't even February yet!!! Have a great week. ReplyDeleteHi Lydia, that Bob Dylan was a poet not just a songwriter and singer. I love his music btw. I never remember poems but I do remember sayings and phrases and things like that. I had never heard of Nia Archives. Honestly sometimes I think I'm culturally challenged! BTW - I'm loving that sunset picture at the end of your post. I hope you ended up having a wonderful long weekend! Thanks for linking up with #WWWhimsy xo
ReplyDeleteI had the loveliest ferry ride last year before Vivid lit up, around parts of the harbour that are not so familiar. I loved your words and pics. Denyse x
ReplyDeleteAn enjoyable post Lydia, thanks for sharing your little loves.

Loved your post Lydia, and I love those Squid Game earrings. I am half way throught the series but it got a bit overwhelming and I had to take a break. You've reminded me to get back and watch the rest.
ReplyDeleteI'm having trouble getting to your substack. the link isn't working for me.

ReplyDeleteI more or less grew up with Dylan's music and lyrics. My brother was one of the 1968 protesters, we learned "Blowin' in the Wind" at school, one of the young Austrian singer-songwriters who was great at the time, Wolfgang Ambros, sang Dylan's songs with very fitting Viennese lyrics and I was in a youth club where some members worshipped Bob Dylan like a demigod. Not me, I'm not a demigod or god worshipper 😉, but I thought he had a great, accurate language. I find his singing rather borderline - I usually like his songs better when they are interpreted by other singers 😁. The film doesn't come out here until sometime in February, but I definitely want to see it.
All the best from Austria, Traude

That's really interesting. Thanks for sharing that peek into a different 'childhood' around the world. It's a moment in history first hand. I didn't realise we'd got the film early - we often do because we're a test market, Australians go to the cinema more than any other country per capita apparently, and it's only 3 times which I'd do in a month so I found the stat really weird.
DeletePS: Wonderful photos!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, some nice photographs.
ReplyDeleteI loved A Complete Unknown. Dylans archives are here in Tulsa and they have quite a great display of his life and career. We are going to go again soon. What I learned about him in my last visit a few years ago was that he was forward looking, not backward. It showed a little bit of that in the movie in that he became famous for folk music but once he moved on he wouldn't play folk songs just to make his fans happy at concerts.
The Dylan center has some footage of him engaging with an audience, I think it was in London, they wanted a greatest hits concert and he was not having it.
He is quite an interesting guy. Check out https://bobdylancenter.com/
I've seen him many times and am often frustrated at the concert but one was a country fairground scene and it worked and it was the first time I thought "Oh, I see what he's trying to do" and the next time was a reverse negative of the fairground gig and it worked again (tho not as well as the fairground one which was his best for me). So your comment about forward looking made a lot of sense. I can see he's constantly trying to evolve his music & performance, rather than recreate the moment in time he was famous for.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely glorious sunset skies! Loved the poem. When you read it, you know why Dylan became one of the greatest amongst the poets and songwriters of his times. Such vivid metaphors and rhyming!!!
