She stared at the screen for a long time, lost in thought. There would be no turning back. Tentatively she pressed send. It was over.

  1. Such a great teaser. I've had that experience myself, waiting forever to send and then just going for it :) Happy Australia Day. #teamIBOT

  2. Yep, I've had that experience too.
Now, I've never contributed to your fiction challenges before, but today I will! Here I go (under 30 words):

For a moment he thought he may actually survive. But as the rock disappeared from underneath him he realised time was a thief and he was the grand prize.

    2. I'm amazed how people can come up with something so good and straight to the point. I struggle to be succinct. Nicely done.

  3. She put the can opener down on the bench in disgust, and turned to face him. He meowed pitifully. Realising she couldn't stay mad at him, she scooped him up and walked into the lounge room.

    1. My own comments aren't working?? Anyway, given the teen angst at home, this just confirms my idea that we really need a pet...

    2. You can't stay mad at pets or kids, can you? Nice piece xo

  5. Oh what did she send?
I've had a lot of time in the car today, thinking about novel progress that I haven't been able to write. This is what I'm hoping will come up in some future, yet to be written scene:

When I hobbled into the room, the pain in my leg taking over the entire left side of my body, I saw them. She was sound asleep on the bed, looking tinier than ever. He was asleep in the chair next to her. His head resting on the bed, his hand on hers. Guilt from a thousand past sins swept over me and I choked back a sob, so grateful that despite all of that, we had ended up here. He had ended up here. And now both of us had him; neither of us would ever be alone again.

  6. Love your story! I want to know what happens next! Here's my attempt....

She was so excited! She was having an interview for a job she had never realised was her dream until now. She booked the flight, the hotel, the car parking. She flew interstate, not caring about the cost. She hadn’t given much thought to not getting it, it was going to be hers. She had even dreamt about it, her sister had been there. That must be a sign, surely…. But then they said ‘no, it’s not yours’. What would she do now? Where would she go? She had no idea… But then the phone rang… Who could it be?

    1. Oh no - I hope this isn't art imitating life? Unless that phone call is bringing new job news!!!
      Nice story tho!!

    2. Nice work, Zita. I hope art imitates life, or is that vice versa? You know what I mean! Good luck xo

  7. Intrigued and wishing I had time to play along this month. As soon as I get this house move over and done with... I might try.

  8. “I feel like I’m out of touch. I don’t get selfie sticks, chai or quinoa doc. Little things but it all just adds to my anxiety” explained Warren to his new therapist, the third this month… “When I get anxious I get those thoughts about hurting people and they don’t stop until….” he trailed off.
“Well, I can show you some techniques for relieving those thoughts and perhaps some medication that might help” explained Dr Ward starting to feel a little wary of his new patient and the oversized duffle bag he kept in his lap.

    2. I'd be a bit wary of the patient, too! I'd like to read more. Great piece.

  9. I don't know that it makes sense now I've edited it (there was more) and I'm still a word over. But anyway, here it is:

Anita was visiting her aging parents, despite it being a strain. They had never gotten over the fact that she wasn’t married. Secretly she thought they were worried she was a lesbian. She wasn't. She just found relationships to be, well - messy. She'd tried dating, and even preferred men as friends over women. But there always came a time when they wanted to infiltrate themselves into her very ordered life. They would do unspeakable acts, like putting their feet up on the coffee table or leaving saucepans on the sink to soak. Anita shuddered. Time to get today other with.

Loved yours. Haven't we all sent an email like that?

    Good to be back xo

    2. He he! Great story - just read the article about the guy divorced for leaving his cup in the sink, so you're on trend!! (Glad you're back! I missed your stories)

  10. I absolutely love the idea of short (very short!) fiction. Your story is great. You can actually feel the tension and relief! Here's my effort...

It was a difficult decision, but the right one. When this was over, he’d be half the man he was – literally. He closed his eyes and counted: 10, 9, 8…

    1. Nice one! And again, very on trend. (Tony did one last month and I submitted one on the subject to the Newcastle Writers Centre competition)

  11. Love these short story ideas Lydia. I saw a thing on FB today, to write the saddest story in four words. A few came to mind, like 'She died all alone', or 'the bottle was empty'. ;)

  13. I take a deep breath; dive deep, bubbles trailing behind. An image of my daughter flits behind my closed eyes. I can't do it. I kick hard to the surface.
