Tell Us about....Style Icons

I don't think too much about fashion - I like what I like and I wear it. I live in Uniqlo Marimekko and occasionally real Marimekko and Kitten D'Amour. On my feet, Birkenstocks and I did have a collection of Kitten D'amour shoes but alas heels are not my friends anymore. Shiny Converse are my new dress shoes.

"Fashion as we knew it is over; people wear now exactly what they feel like wearing." – Mary Quant

Who is my style icon?

Yayoi Kusama. I love her art but she also always looks cool! I've written about her work in Canberra, displays in Sydney, her museum in Tokyo, seeking her robot (and failing), and of course the big exhibition in Melbourne. Her art is very much part of her, and her dresses and the hair always look so fabulous.

I too rock the red hair from time to time, in theory all the time but it washes out after a few weeks and sometimes I take a bit of time to do it again....like now. She is not afraid to mix patterns, like me since the Anthony Bloomfield days in the '80's. I've just tried to google him and it seems he's vanished. Which is sad, as he really started the wearing two prints fad.

The bottom line is, style is so much more than clothes. It's in all that you do, it's in how you carry yourself. Confidence and style are often intertwined (though not bullish). If the clothes make you feel good, bring you happiness when wearing them, style is usually on display.

“It were a grief so brief to part with thee. Farewell.” William Shakespeare

I loved these boots, but alas they split on the top, allowing water in, which defeated the point. I wore them through puddles, to shows and muddy festivals. They've been there for the storm clouds and rain. They were often met with compliments from strangers. It was a hard goodbye, after 10 or 15 years of good times.

It's a sad goodbye when you aren't ready for it.

The farewells that are forced upon you.

Okay, well the lover bit isn't appropriate but as they say in The Castle, 'the whole vibe of the thing' fits.

They've been replaced with these snuggly and sparkly boots, though these are heavier so may not be as good for the mud and dancing at Bluesfest or other outdoor dancing.

Do you get sad when you have to replace old favourites?

"Mirrors are perpetually deceitful. They lie and steal your true self. They reveal only what your mind believes it sees." - Dee Remy

Someone I know online was complaining about how they looked. I know those words too well, the ageing appearance that creeps into your vision, noticing not so much as how you are, but how you are no longer...

The irony is, she put up a really lovely photo. Not false modesty but not seeing herself as the rest of the world sees her. I had said to her 'We judge ourselves more harshly than reality, so don't listen to that a$$hole in your head!'

My body shape has changed with age, and for once I carry weight on my waist. I puff up and down on a daily basis it seems. Making  decisions on what to wear always a last moment choice if in the evening.

I was going to see Alison Wonderland at Machine Hall, but before that, stopping by to see Headstrong at Oxford Arts Factory. I was wondering what to wear as both venues and performers were different style requirements.

Then I remembered I am old and will look like an out of place weirdo at both regardless of my outfit and I genuinely relaxed and figured I would wear what I liked as I was going to look out of place anyway....Problem solved!

So for comfort, I dug out this dress. I always get compliments in it, which makes me laugh.

Hilariously, it is 22 years old. How do I know, you ask?

It's a maternity dress.

I actually wanted to let BellyBasics know how excellent their quality as it's still in pristine condition but it appears they are no more. The dress outlasted the company.

It's my go too whenever I decide I am too fat for all my clothes. Or if it is super hot and I just want something loose. I always put it on, feeling depressed and thinking I look ridiculous. Then someone at the party or in the line for the bathroom will come up to me and tell me I look great and ask me where I got it. And that is the lesson that what we see is tainted by what we think.

If only we always saw ourselves through other people's eyes....

Dressed for the occasion....

A few weeks back I attended the magnificent ballet, Alice in Wonderland. If it ever returns, make sure you go. I'm not what you'd call a fan of ballet. I think I've been 3 times in my life (and only for one where I love the book - Three musketeers & Don Quixote).

This production is stunning - it's visually delightful and imaginative. Just beautiful.

I dressed for the occasion with my Alice bag and earrings.

However, I was stopped a quite few times, both in the street and at the show. and complimented on the dress. I don't wear this dress often as it seems a little over the top (and I guess overly feminine for me) and yet that was the thing that stood out to strangers.

Makes me realise often it's the image in our head that holds us back. Like Alice, maybe we need to ignore what we think we know and be open to what's going on around us. Maybe we need to dress out of our normal patterns more often?

"Alice had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but out-of-the-way things to happen, that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in the common way.”

"If you love something, wear it all the time." Vivienne Westwood

We have a formal event on the weekend. My go to outfit for this kind of dress code is my wedding dress. The last time I wore it was 2019  and the intervening years of lockdown eating and menopause have not been kind. My bodyshape has changes.

I read somewhere that the ideal weight is the one when you stop worrying about it, so I've tried to think like that (or not think, more accurately) but when I tried on the dress is was very tight and looked curvy in all the wrong places.

I do have a back up outfit that looks okay, but I think I'll stick with the dress (unless I catch a glint of horror in my husband's eye - he would never say I look terrible straight to my face, but the thought might sneak across his face). I'll try to chanel the confidence of these ladies, and the great lesson I learnt that night becuse the dress is so beautiful and it might just be the last time I get to squeeze into it.

I am hoping the luxury of wearing the dress, it's beauty and the magic of the all the memories woven into it's material is enough to carry me with confidence and more importantly, feel beautiful.

It holds not just the day of our wedding, 24 years ago but a dinner on the Eastern Oriental train on our honeymoon, countless nights of merriment at Mayorall Balls, wearing it to a formal dinner when newly pregnant and smiling at the sheen of the curve in the velvet on my previously flat belly, dancing the night away to great music with at a family wedding, and most recently, wearing it after a long hiatus at another wedding and feeling so very happy it still fit.

I will be sad when it no longer fits, as it's as beautiful as it first was, and timeless in style and looks brand new.

So wish me luck that I can enjoy the dress on the night. For that is what this dress is made for. To feel beautiful and to party....

"Fashion as we knew it is over; people wear now exactly what they feel like wearing." – Mary Quant

I will be honest, I'm not a big fashion person. I just like what I like. I only went to the McQueen Exhibition because my other plans got cancelled. However, I did enjoy it, but maybe not for the 'right' reasons.

I loved the curation (or the way it was set out, more than what was actully chosen for display). I loved the knowledgeable people talking to their friends - it was a real insight into people's passion.

There's something alluring about that. I don't have to like the thing you love, but I love the way it energises you. I can sort of see the beauty through your eyes (and that can be anything - trucks. woodwork, statistics) and I might even envy that passion for something.

"I think there is beauty in everything. What 'normal' people perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it."—Alexander McQueen

I liked this room because no matter where you stood, you needed the reflection to see the full picture. Just like life.

I've just discovered I'm too old to wear....

I was invited to a Survivor party, where we were required to dress as contestants on the tv show. I googled a few images of Elizabeth (as that's how long ago it was since I watched it) and came up with an idea of the attire....

I already knew I was too old for a midriff so opted for a boob tube buff that went all the way down to my waist....

However, I discovered a few other things I'm too old for:

1. Plaits. My partner opened with 'What's with the Pocahontas look?' I looked ridiculous.
2. Boob Tube. I have sadly discovered I have back fat. That's too depressing for further discussion.

On the plus side, I got to wear sneakers to a party and over-bronze my body (which was meant to be sunburn but everyone kept commenting on my tan....maybe I should do that more often?!)

The highlight, I got to smash a tile with a hammer...but my pent up aggression was commented on, so maybe there's an issue there I need to investigate.

You don't need to watch the clip, and rest assured I looked nothing like this.

Would you survive on Survivor? Who would you go as to a Survivor Party?

Linking with #IMustConfess as I really shouldn't have gone out in public dressed like that - and last night I noticed 3 people in the street wearing boob tubes, and all I could think of was how old and fat (on my back) I'd become - it was depressing...some things will haunt us in the most unexpected ways....

New trend alert - Summer Shimmer

I went to Totem on the weekend, the fabulous new Cirque du Soleil show which just hit our shores. You don't need me to tell you it's fabulous. It is. It always is.
I was very taken with some of the performers strutting around in body glitter (male and female). That was huge in the '70's. What a big mistake that it went out of fashion! So I'm saying to you, let's bring it back in!
This summer, if you are out to a party, festival or club, slap on some glitter! What could be more festive? What's more uplifting?
We are constantly telling the kids about the magic properties of fairy dust, so lets heed our own advice and make our world a little more glitzy...
Who's with me? (Just be thankful I didn't decide we should all dress as South American Indians - cos it was 50/50 on that count, I was equally taken with the fluffy leg things. Just my whole big ass and lack of ripped mid-drift put me off).

If you do join me in the glitter campaign, let me know if it lifted your mood and dazzled up the night! I have a cocktail party, a 50th, in 2 weeks - and I'm already stocked up and ready to go! It will even go with my shoes!

Otherwise, if you see a sparkly old lady roaming the streets, come over and say hi!

I'm a little reluctant to link the clip, as I prefer the element of surprise, but for those who have never been, and had no intention of going, maybe this will lure you:

Elegant evening style under $50...WHAT?!

As an homage to Ness I will refer to everything as a piece (purely for my own amusement - I am sniggering as I type)...so this piece is from my favourite shop in Singapore - a little cheapie market with the best clothes, and my first (and only) shopping stop on every visit.

This piece set me back $12. That may've even been twelve Singapore dollars, which is even less but let's say it's a whopping $12 Aussie.

These shoes I had to buy to go with a cocktail dress - I made the mistake of getting this absolutely fabulous cocktail dress then realised I had nothing to wear with it - neither shoes nor jewellery. So that proved a more expensive lesson than I intended. However, as I needed shoes for just that dress, I set my limit for $30. I ended up getting these shoes for $25 (somewhere in the city) because they were deemed too tarty, uncool or just plain ugly for a normal price (they were a marked down mark down. I LOVE those!) I liked them enough, and they went with the cocktail number (which is way more than the $50 limit thus not shown), so I got them, and they go with this dress too...

I had better earrings to match but I dropped one down the sink when drunk(ish). So these I got for $16 online - I also got a number of pairs for xmas gifts so the postage is divvied up on the gifts, not this pair. I'll just wear one with my other ear covered in a fancy hairstyle to keep me under the $50 limit). Or I could wear these which were only $10.

There you have it, glam evening wear for under $50....

Head case

Actually, I was chuffed to be cased by Musings of the Misguided so as I am about to shut the blog down for a holiday, I thought I better jump in quickly with my answers...

1.How long have you been blogging and why did you start? I was in this delusional state where I thought I could earn enough money not to find an actual out of the home job...I have since given up that idea, and now just blog for pleasure - the upside being it gives me free reign to write what I like, and when I like...It's been over 2 years now, which I find hard to believe...it might even be just clocking into my third. But it still feels very new.

Nothing more Audrey Hepburn than a dress in a box

2.If your wardrobe could talk what would it say about you and tell us about your favourite or most worn item. I have a Jack Skellington hand bag, which I love. I adore my Essendon Footy jumper. Very fond of the Crazy Cat Shoes, my wedding dress is the only dress I own that came in a box, I have a collection of hand painted stockings (for which I am famous for), and I have an Alannah Hill furry cardigan that is often called my Hooker jacket (though would probably be more fitting with Alice Francis's term 'Flappies')...How do I narrow it down to one? My wardrobe would say I wear what I like and to hell with fashion trends...

3.What’s your idea of the perfect date night? Anything with just my partner - movie, dinner, concert - anything. We don't get a lot of outings without kids or company, so I really treasure the time when we have fun together alone.

4.What’s on your worth casing list? Currently Hawaii - I am pouring over photos daily of the volcanos, Big Island and Kauai. Scoot airfares are currently also being cased. And I'm hoping I can get us back to Coffs for the weekend if the price is right (Tiger Sale, $1 return fares please).

5. If you had a theme song, what would it be and why? This is hard. Currently I'm listening to Yeezus, so I'm ready for Friday. Been overloading on Alice Francis, but she is too cool to be applicable to me.  I'll go with Theophilus London's I stand alone because I like what he's saying...to anyone wanting to make change in this world and in themselves remember 'the clothes don't make the man, it's the man that makes the clothes' . He rocks quirky fashion like no other...A man after my own fashion style...

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn” Orson Welles

You will soon see why I'm not a fashion blogger, if only for my photographic abilities...

I don't know how you do those boards you you'll just have to look piece by piece and put it together yourself!

I shop mainly by an online company, who I'm not going to name because I'm currently furious with them for sending me a hat in a plastic bag so it arrived looking like this:

Instead of just refunding me the money based on the photos like they have in the past, I've had to post it back with great hassle on my part, and I'm still waiting for the money. So no plugs for them - and given your stats, that's a big loss for them.

Anyway, I got myself this fabulous number for $45 (I got 2 other things so postage was $3.50 if you divide it up). Trollied Dolly Dress with a super cute cutout detail.

I got these little earrings from Bundanoon Markets for $10.

The stockings came from Alannah Hill bargain bin, while trawling around on my random acts of kindness mission - down to $10. They have sexy 'pretend' suspenders, a look I'm a little obsessed with at the moment, which is weird given I'm 107 and don't really pull off sexy...

Lastly, the I LOVE Billy shoes I got online about a million years ago, so from memory they were $25 (postage was divided up with another pair of shoes but I sold them on ebay and charged the buyer the postage I paid in the shoe cost.)

Under $100 including postage....happy, happy!

Crooked smile, wicked style on 'em

I am not a fashion blogger - I know this news is probably astounding to you. But seriously, I'm not.

And here is why.

I saw a super cute dress online. It's a purple sundress for daywear. However, it is one shouldered. And I am 107. Years old, not pounds (that's meant to be a joke but I don't even know if that means I'm fat or tiny?) So while I want the dress, I'm not sure if I can pull it off.

I questioned my FB entourage, explaining it was not an evening dress, but a day time one for strutting around the supermarket, hanging in the playground or heading for lunch. What age is too old for a one shouldered dress?

Of course, because they're my friends, they all said I'd look great in it. All of which I discounted instantly because they're my friends.

So I am asking the fashion bloggers and strangers out there for the honest truth. What age is too old for the one shouldered dress? (I understand evening wear in the style can be worn at pretty much any age, it's the daytime thing that I'm pondering).

I would put a picture up of the dress, but I'm too old to be able to download it, apparently.

So let me have it. What is the cut off for the one shouldered dress?

Crazy Cat Shoes

I went to Malaysia with a friend I’ve known for forty years. It was meant to be for our fortieth birthday celebration, but as I was still breast feeding, and had no income to speak of, she kindly let us delay our trip. It took me three years to save up the money to go, but eventually we went, no longer to celebrate our forty years on the planet, but forty years of friendship.
We had a wonderful time, relaxing, reading, massages galore and fabulous cocktails for lunch and dinner. It was weird to be away from our husbands and kids, but nice to be unencumbered for a change.(Imagine just being able to jump in a taxi and do your seat belt up? No Maxi taxi with carseat fiasco, no clicking everyone in). It was also lovely to have some time together, as we live in different cities, and I am remarkably the world’s worst telephoner: I call no one. I’ve lost the art of phone conversation.  I don’t really enjoy the faceless voice at the end of the line, though apparently I’m fine with faceless emails.
We shopped, with marginal success, she acquiring luggage limits of new footwear, me happy with just one pair of fancy red ankle boots, but more Angry Birds and Gangnam Style shirts than you can imagine.
We headed off to the airport together for our hour apart flights home. While she was in the chemist line, I popped next door to a shoe shop. In a moment, I saw them and had to have them. Miraculously, they were in my evidently elusive size. Within a minute they were in my bag!

The Crazy Cat shoes are super comfy, and literally put a spring in my step! I love just looking at them, because they are quirky enough to make me smile. They also have the whole holiday experience wrapped up in them – they remind me of my friend, my week off from reality, and the lovely laid back island of Langkawi.
Another friend told me I should enjoy them while I can, because there soon comes an age when you can’t wear those sort of shoes (I suspect I am that age already but inner city living means anything goes and there’s always someone weirder than you walking by).
I rang my friend for her birthday, slackly but predictably two days late. She mentioned she thought we should look at Vietnam for our next beach holiday, sans enfants. Guess I better start saving…Do you think they’ll have animal footwear in Hanoi?

Do you have happiness wrapped up in an item of clothing?

Clothes make the Man, but frailty thy name is Woman

Mark Twain is attributed with “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” We judge a lot about people by the way they dress and their ‘style’. We can often tell where people live by the way they dress, the stories of modern day tribes are true. With that information at first glance, we often then throw in a great deal of judgement for good measure.
We have some friends from university days who live literally 5km away in the next suburb, but the growing gulf between us is widening daily. We are definitely inner city, a very eclectic mix of people of all different races and backgrounds and all different styles of dress. Our friends down the road are fast becoming very conservative, middle class suburbanites. The force of keeping up with the Jones’s is strong in this one.
One day at lunch, I mentioned our recent trip to Melbourne on Tiger and the wife exclaimed “Tiger? I don’t know how you can fly with them. The people!!” at which point she screwed up her face. I had to point out that we were those “people” – people with three children that still wanted to have weekends away interstate, but needed the cheapest airfares possible for the ONE HOUR flight. I’m not sure which carrier they fly with, as I’ve not noticed a ‘better class’ of passenger on any plane, economy here and economy there are very much the same. I was a little taken aback at the snobbish attitude, but more so by the fact she didn’t actually think there was anything wrong with expressing it.
We ventured off to the Roller Derby together, which I adore not just for the sport but the subculture and anything goes attire of both the skaters and the audience. In my mind very cool – but the first thing the husband said was “There are a lot of weird people here” and they left soon after.  We all laughed as it was basically our neighbourhood, relocated to another venue. The gulf, I realised then, was quite a chasm. Five kilometres requiring a mental passport.
The very wonderful M. T. Anderson wrote in his giggle inducing children’s book, Whales on Stilts,  “Lily looked at her two friends. She felt proud to be with them – especially Jasper because he wasn’t afraid to dress stupidly in public. Lily never wanted to have the kind of friends who refused to eat fries in a sparkly brown jumpsuit.” I always saw myself as a kind of Lily, as I love those who dress against the norm, follow my own style and think of myself as easy going but I had a wake up call coming and learnt that my tribe is equally judgmental.
I went to look at a private school, and was one of three women not wearing the unspoken uniform of chinos and a crisp white shirt at the Open Day. I smirked to myself at how ridiculous they all looked, rolled my eyes when one of the students said to his friend as I walked in “You can tell she lives around here” and basically felt far superior to these pathetic sheep. The only people that spoke to me were the other two colourful dressers…we automatically ruled all those other women out. Was it fair? No. Was it snobbish and judgmental? Definitely. Was it something Lily would be proud of? I think not.
We are quick to judge those different from ourselves, and yet we don’t get to know them before we judge, we take one look and assess. More importantly, the snobbish, superficial judgement runs both ways. We spend a lot of time teaching our children values and ideals that we don’t follow ourselves. We travel the globe to open ourselves to new ideas and cultures, but we don’t open our mind to the tribe down the street. If I really want to be like Lily, I have to see beyond the sparkly brown jumpsuit, I need to remember that it’s only what’s on the outside…As Alexander Theroux said “Hypocrisy is the essence of snobbery, but all snobbery is about the problem of belonging".
