Raised the bar....

Tina Turner is 80 and looking fabulous. While I'm not really one to focus on the external, I have to say she really raised the bar. Check out her Insta to see what I mean.

Looks aside, she reportedly left Ike with 36 cents in 1976. Eight years later, and at the old age (in rock'n'roll terms) of 45, she took the world by storm when she released the album Private Dancer, with the massive global hit What's Love Got to Do With It. (The original is here.)

She kept doing what she loved until she retired at 70. She's been busy with the musical Tina and other projects while battling a myriad of serious health issues.

If you're looking for inspiration, she's the real deal. Whatever you are going through right now, may she be an example of light at the end of the tunnel.

The great lady sums it up perfectly “How did I think I would be at 80? Not like this...I’m happy to be an 80-year-old woman.”



Kygo released his mix of the 36 year old song (can you believe it was that long ago?!) last week and I haven't stopped singing it. So it's this week's #SundayCovers. Hope it puts a spring in your step like it did for me.

Little by little

As I wrote here, I was struggling to come out of lockdown. The overly cautious person didn't really feel like the real me.
However, this weekend we finally had a weekend that felt like a real weekend!














We went out to dinner on Friday night, just for pizza but ate in the restuarant - a first in over three months! On Saturday friends invited us to go whale watching on their boat and it was FABULOUS! I got as much of a kick being on the water and seeing out beautiful city as I did seeing the whales up close! I did unfortunately forget my real camera so the shots were not that good, but always better to see with the real eye anyway....

Sunday was lunch at friends....a fullish diary for a change. And a lot of time out of the house....I'm still watching the numbers each day but I'm getting there.

Feeling a little more like me.

I love the light in this photo - it's not a B&W photo but it looks like one. A reminder that things aren't always as they seem or what we see is only what we think we see...

It's no secret I'm a huge fan of electroswing so there's little surprise all things Gatsby appeal to me. I think the music embodies the fun and freedom discussed in this quote by Colleen Moore:

Here comes the sun

This weeks song is the lovely cover of the Beatles classic, and as we ease slowly out of restrictions, it seems fitting as the tentative interactions with the outside world become more regular.

Take care everyone - remember you still need to Social Distance and sanitise, app or no app.

Please note you need to take extra care if you have the app on iPhone as it's not registering contact properly. Pay attention to where the outbreaks are and make sure you get tested if you may have come into contact with them.

Music & Memories

This cover isn't new but it still makes me smile and lifts my mood - now with the added bonus of reminding me of my fabulous trip to Womad! Very keen to try and do that next year! I've missed out on too many things these last months, got to make up for lost time!

This song makes me miss being in a crowd, it makes me miss all the benefits of living in the city. I don't think I've stayed home so much since I was a child. I am having fun but it just seems such a waste of life.



And of course the original is this classic song!

All we can do is all we can do. So for now, I'm planning all the wonderful things I will do to make up for lost time (in my head) and play music. Lots of happy music that fills me with joy.

Rescue me...

Someone left these records out to be rescued in the CovidCleanOut

This cover's been on high rotation for my morning exercise, and quite possibly my theme song for the lockdown, dedicated to all the smart scientists and doctors out there..."Can't you see that I'm lonely? Rescue me!"

Fontella Bass released the original that I know, though I believe Aretha did a version too. Here's the cover that I'm loving at the moment.

Everything old is new again.

I talked about the healing power of music here and here, so it was little surprise to me that this UK study found music takes 13 minutes to release sadness or 9 minutes to make you happy. In this lock down life I'm exercising online but with my own dance track in the background, and it starts my day in the best possible way. It shakes off any low mood and makes me feel great.

So I recommend, and again this is just for mood maintenance not depression (always see your doctor if low moods hang around for more than a day or two, now is not the time to 'soldier on'), blasting your favourite tunes as you cook or do the housework, or during exercise or anything more than 9 minutes...

To get you in the mood, I am going to play a game with you all called #SundayCovers. I love the song The Sun is Shining Down by JJ Grey and Mofro. It is however, a little down for me at the moment. I was delighted when my Spotify alerted me to the fact that Lost Frequencies had done a cover (mix?) of it. Much more dancable and yet still the same pretty song.

Every Sunday, you can add a post to the link of a cover of a song you like (and a link somewhere in your post to the original so those of us with time and inclination can compare). Let's find 9 mins of new music for those happy soundtracks.
