Marathon Weekend

Sydney put on the good weather (for a change) for the marathon day. All the previous 6 star runners went for the new Seventh Star.  Huge turn out in supporters cheering people on.

It was a lot of fun and surprisingly easy to move around the course.

Where I cheered from, the DJ kept playing YMCA and both the spectators and the runners would do the actions, bringing lots of energy to the 34km mark. Also appropriate for the Rainbow friendly city.

The winner of the day was the giant Labubu from China who ran a good time in a furry suit with huge mascot head. (The winner in my mind, not the official winner, obvs). I was too slow to get the pic as we all went nuts with excitement when we saw it. This lady was the Sydney Seventh Star - she's carrying the Opera House (but alas moved it as the camera snapped)

The Opera House seal, Benny.

We had taken the overseas visitors out on a boat the day before, and while the weather wasn't so great, it was still lovely, as always. A pav and lamingtons mandatory for dessert, after El Jannah chicken, which is pretty representative of Sydney dining.

It's always wonderful seeing our beautiful harbour through the eyes of visitors.

We celebrated post race at La Foote, gazing down to the Harbour Bridge, and everyone agreed it had been a wonderful race weekend!

Small shout out to La Foote, along with the great food and cocktails, I love that they support the brilliant non profit Two Good Co. (Changing the lives of women and feeding women in shelters - you can help buy using their catering, which is fab or their toiletries which are luxe). This sort of thing costs businesses nothing but does so much to help others. Made me very happy to see it.

The only disappointment was the other rally that went on and I'm glad the Sydney one didn't burst into violence as I expected. If you are worried about housing, look at negative gearing and the suburbs that campaign against apartments. It's not Immigration, it's low density.  As for the racism, we are better than that. Let's not follow the bad example of other countries.

Do you run or go to watch the marathon?

Enjoying the best of Sydney

My longtime friend, we met in a hotel pool in Malaysia when we were 12, was visiting from England. She wanted an easy day to catch up so I picked her up and we drove up to Cottage Point for lunch and a swim. Enroute, I needed to put air into the tyres and apparently you have to pay for this in England! I can't get my head around this at all. Surely for safety it needs to be free. And it's air. And you'll probably buy something from the shop while you are there...However, I digress....

We caught up for hours, chatting nonstop while lying by the pool or swimming, with the noise of cicadas and surrounded by stunning views. It's the most relaxing day, even with the hour-long drive to get there.

We are a far cry from those young children who met and played on holidays, and then stayed loosely in touch. Yet nothing has changed. We covered off on politics, the apparent rage issue Sydney has (she had noticed it too), ageing, our kids, our husbands, our travel plans, her friends (some of whom I've never met but she has mentioned to me - she thinks it's funny that I ask about them, but it's almost like characters in a book - I feel I know them because every five years or so I get an update, A bit like the 7up documentary), menopause and of course, our recent holidays. It was in part, the same conversation I would have with any other friend. A sign of a good friendship, when time & distance creates no barrier.

I dropped her to where she was staying and then raced home before heading out. I had tickets to Night Songs at Coney Island as a date night for my husband and I, and it would have been such a romantic evening but alas he felt sick so stayed home. It was too last minute for anyone to come so I set off solo.

You were taken on an old ferry for a tour around the harbour at sunset with a band playing music. Moon River melodically accompanying the giant full moon on the rise as the pink hues grew across the sky. It was beautiful. Finally, we arrived at shimmering lights of Luna Park.

The band proceeded to play in the fairground before we all made our way into Coney Island. Alas no photos allowed in there but after a quick go in the Mirror Maze, the immersive show began. The orchestra was sectioned off in the Joy Wheel and we could walk around while the choristers moved around and performed near us. They were on the walkways, up the stairs of the slides (at one point zipping down the slides), shooting paper planes past us and so on. It was a fully immersive experience with 200 or so voices telling a tale of war and the loss of children in the fallout. It was beautiful yet very sad and disturbing.

When it was over, the boat took us back across the inky black harbour that was capturing the sparkling lights of the city. The boat played recorded jazz swing standards by Glenn Miller, a little cheerier way to end the evening.

It was a glorious way to enjoy this beautiful city of mine. A brilliant idea by those organisers of the Festival of Sydney.

And that is what's been on my calendar. What's been on yours?

Fingers crossed!

Every year I wait for clear weather and then buy tickets to the Opera on the Harbour - I've been lucky enough to have perfect nights for La Boheme (which was delightfully stunning), West Side Story and La Traviata this way. But with the current weather, and constant rain, I'm not feeling certain I'll get to Phantom of the Opera this year.

However, one can but hope!

I really feel for the people of Lismore. I can't imagine what they are going through, having only just begun the clean up from the last floods. And my heart goes out for the organiser of BluesFest if he is affected for the third year in a row. So my irritation with the rain is merely that and I should probably count myself lucky!

Back in February, a kind friend took me to the Cinema on the harbour, which I'd never been to before. We had a perfect night and saw The Good Boss with Javier Bardem, which is great. Dark comedy, well done and left me thinking about it.

As always though, it's the scenery that steals the show. Seeing the light change as the sunset and the city lights up is always breathtaking.

So while I'm not the biggest fan of that musical, I've got my fingers crossed I get to see it!

And Sydneysiders, if you didn't know 'The Phantom of the Opera is here!' (see what I did there? Hope you sang it...ticket website is linked)
