Riddle Me This (again)...

It's been 6 years since I last did a Riddle me this post, so the only way to avoid a depressing rant about all the questions the Federal Government's lack of Pfizer ordering was to go 'old school'. So feel free to enlighten me if you know the answer to any or all of the questions.

1. Why do some things make you laugh hysterically but other people don't find amusing at all? And vice versa? (Assuming they aren't offensive in anyway, just the pure humour side)

2. How was Dusty Hill (of ZZ Top) only 72 when he died? I thought they were in their 50's in the 1980's.

3. How does music have such an instantaneous uplifting effect?

4. Why does sunshine feel (and smell on line dried washing) so good?

5. Where will all the disposable masks go?

6. Why do we refer to female politicians by their first name but male politicians by their surname? I am part of the problem here but I am working on it.

7. How can some writers even think of the beautiful phrasing and imagery for the most inconsequential scenes in their books?

8. How will it be safe to send 180 predominately unvaccinated 17 year olds from many different postcodes (in some schools, over 100!)  without creating super spreader events. Especially if they have to travel through the 8 LGAs on public transport (and I mean that only in a statistical increased risk of catching and spreading to other students, but could equally be a random case of bad luck too. Malta announced yesterday that almost HALF their COIVD patients in hospital had no symptoms. They were in hospital for other reasons and picked up in the routine testing. That is a country with 80% of the population vaccinated so the likelihood of attending school and being positive but asymptomatic is high).

9. Is there anywhere to recycle little glass bottles with eye droppers? And why does eyedropper sound wrong (but I googled and it is what they're officially called.)

10. Seriously, how did we get the vaccines so wrong?

Even MORE Riddle Me This?

These have all come up over the last week - I am amazed at what I don't know! Can you help?

1. Once the egg is fertilized, what makes the bones start to form? How does just a tiny egg and sperm suddenly grow a skull? (Who knew I'd be more comfortable with the sex talk than the science part?)

2. Why is it, if humans from the same family have a child there are risks of mental degradation but with horses, they're thoroughbreds? (or in the child's terms, with humans it's bad, but with horses it's good?) Why doesn't it cause problems with the horses brains?

3. In evolution, what is the point of the moody adolescence? (That's my question, obviously, but figured I'd chuck it in there).

4. Does a blind person need to blink? (My question, does a person with a glass eye or no eye need to blink?)

5. Why is the rude finger rude? (I would also ask why are swear words considered bad - I understand the biblical ones like damn but what makes certain words for body parts or functions worse than others?)

6. When a baby is just born, does it know who it's dad is? (I wonder if it even knows it's mum?)

7. Does anyone really expect Beyoncé to be airbrushed in real life? (That's obviously my question - and I'll add I thought she looked great anyway, so I really don't get that was a story at all).

8. . Why are fat cells different to normal cells, or do just all cells get fat?

9. Is DNA what makes something a living thing?

10. Did you know the Devil spelt backwards is LIVED? This was pointed out to me by my 6 year old who misread a scripture find-a-word. There has to be a story in that! (I know that's not a question but it blew my mind)

Do you have the answer to these questions? Do your kids ask you questions you can't answer on a regular basis?

Riddle Me This? Mysteries of the Universe

1. When you get nits, does one or two jump onto your head? Or a pregnant one? If it's just one, how do you end up with eggs? (if this is common knowledge, I really don't know so tell me - I may be more stupid than you realise)

2.Is there a language where Q stand alone? If it always has to be Qu, then why doesn't Q just make the Qu sound by itself?

3.How does the song 'Dem Bones' end up talking about 'Hear the word of the Lord'? Is the skeleton hearing it? Or is the skeleton walking around the work of God? Or was it just written when everyone chucked a bit of religion into every song?

4. Why don't more people rob banks in ambulances?

5. How can you get too scared to do something you worked up the courage to do the year before?

6.Why does your phone lose internet connection whenever your car breaks down?

7.Why does the cold snap suddenly end whenever you accidently leave food in the boot of your car?

8. Stealing from They Might Be Giants, but who put the alphabet in Alphabetical Order?

9. Why do kids tattoos come off every time with olive oil until the day you put them on her face?

10. Can you send your kid to school with tattoos on their face? Will you or the kid get in trouble?

Even more Riddle me this?

1. How does a gullet work? I don't get how the food gets in if it's a closed throat, so to speak? (I am not being funny, I seriously don't get it - and am possibly that stupid).

2. How can I get a bruise this round on my arm and not know how I did it? I actually thought it was a burn at first because it was so red in the shower. Surely I should have hurt myself at the time?

3. Why don't more planets have rings?

4. Why was Wanatabe the only person allowed to say Godzilla in the movie? Is that a racist joke in there?

5. Why even bother with Binoche? That could have been anyone at all - including some extra for about $100...(Let me tell you, I was so disappointed! I love Ms Binoche)

6. Which idiot decided it's cute to have kids in action movies? It's not. It's stupid and ruins the film by boring us all to death and making the mature people like myself pretend to vomit, while rolling eyes so much that you can't actually watch the film anymore. (On racist things, has anyone noticed how American films always put the Asian kid in a baseball cap? Indiana, Godzilla, Walking Dead? What's that about?)

7. Where have all the good guys gone? (See what I did there?)

8. I have started learning German (in the car, so I'll be fluent in a few days). I learnt the words for 35 different types of wine in lesson 2. I still don't know how to pay for them. Will Germans pay for my drinks or will the next chapter be what to say if you're arrested for not paying in a bar?

9. How many beers is our Treasurer hoping to win in this lawsuit, and will he give the beers to charity? Or will he give them smokes instead? (Of course, was it really defamation as he was actually selling tickets to the sit down with him for 7334 beers a person?)

10.  We were watching Veep last night, and in it, a young man said "I'll be 22 when I finish College, and I know I'll have to carry that student loan debt with me for the next 27 years". It was meant to be depressing. Can I ask why are we taking on that highly flawed system, when we had a much better one?

Give me the answers or pose some of your own questions...

Even More Riddle Me This?

I'm tired, so tired that that tonight for dinner I'm having a gin and tonic. Don't worry, not an alcoholic. Just lazy - I only have the energy to make one thing, and dinner would be messier, and require more work. It will only be one, as I'd have to get up off the couch to make another, and then I'd have to fill the ice tray. Obviously, I just should have eaten what I fed the kids, but I digress...

Anyway, all I can do this evening is list the weird questions that have puzzled me over the last few weeks...

1. What is brown sugar? (I mean how is it made that makes it different to white sugar)

2.  Kevin Spacey is in Chinese movie - what's that about?

3. Black undies under white shorts? I can already see your bra, isn't that enough? (or am I old and out of fashion?)

4. Why did they nail Jesus to the cross? (I am serious, I don't know, my youngest keeps asking and I keep mumbling about how 'they' didn't like him because he was King of the...mumble mumble - I accept I'm obviously quite stupid to have gotten to my age and not actually know. I did almost say that he swapped with someone and then realised that was in Life of Brian. And I'm not joking about that either.)

5. Sesame Street did an alphabet dance thing and there was a little kid dancing in a wheelchair & it brought tears to my eyes. Is that normal? Best to not to answer that. Just move along.

6. Why do they make all the bonus features on DVDs? Why don't they just make more episodes?

7. Why do we say 'Boo' when we want to scare someone?

8. Why are people making things up on twitter about the missing plane? And why are these rumours then getting published in newspapers? Does nobody fact check anymore?

9. Why do they keep advertising sad movies as comedies? (Philomena is not quite the lark it looks like in the ad, and I've heard Le Weekend is the same).

10. Is this really necessary? Or am I naïve?

Do you have the answers or other questions?

Riddle me this, once more...

1. Why do I always forget to set up the google analytics code? And how do I make it happen automatically?

2. Do you eat soup or drink soup?

3. Why didn't Americans adopt the metric system, especially when they fought so hard to get rid of the British? (I believe there are only 3 countries not metric these days)

4. Do any other countries, other than America,  call autumn 'Fall'?

5. What is the job title of a food court cleaner - you know, the person that clears the rubbish and wipes down tables?

6. What are clicks? (as in three clicks west). Are they actually kilometres? So why does the US army use metric?

7. What countries are on the equator?*

8. How thick is the equator?

9. Is the earth an actual sphere, like the globe implies? If so, how is that possible?

10. Why don't I seem to know anything any more?

I have a confession. These questions all came up at dinner after the Melbourne Cup (except #1). I was asked by my kids, and failed to have answers. I have googled the answer to number 7, because I was tired of sounding like an idiot who didn't know anything about anything at all. This is what happens when you eat dinner in a food court with inquiring minds.

So without further ado, the countries on the equator are as follows (let me know if you got them all):

From Africa eastward...
  1. Sao Tome and Principe
  2. Gabon
  3. Republic of The Congo
  4. Democratic Republic of The Congo
  5. Uganda
  6. Kenya
  7. Somalia
  8. Maldives (the equator passes through the territory but not on dry land)
  9. Indonesia
  10. Kiribati (the equator may or may not touch dry land)
  11. Ecuador
  12. Colombia
  13. Brazil
(from http://geography.about.com/od/physicalgeography/a/equatorialctys.htm).

Have your kids stumped you with a question lately? Or do you have one yourself, that the Universe has confounded you with? Or better yet, do you have an answer?

Riddle me this (2)

1. Why do things burn up as they come into the atmosphere, but some things don't? (Like spaceship metal-yes, I saw Gravity - pretty but let's just say not a lot of action).

2. How can the Republicans really believe Food Stamps are a bad thing? Really?

3. Can you imagine if the Government workers all stopped here?

4. Why is a sports field called an oval, even if it's a rectangle?

5. Why can't kids wait A MINUTE when you tell them you'll do it for them in a second? (My son cut his finger because I didn't come rushing over  to cut some cheese for him.)

6. How has it taken me 3 weeks to read a story that's 125 pages long? (Really enjoying Wild Sargasso Sea but just don't seem to be able to sit down and read it)

7. Why is it stupid people talk at the movies? Not only are they annoying you by talking, but what they actually say is idiotic.

8. How did my house get so messy over the school holidays? (I actually know the answer to that, just having me a little pity party)

9. I saw the ad for Green Arrow, and it looks FAB! Why are the worst comics (Thor, Green Arrow) the best Marvel movies?

10. How did Tom Clancy write all those books by 66? I was amazed he wasn't older.

Who has answers? Or do you have other questions?

Riddle me this...

1. I've been to 2 fancy restaurants this month and neither offered me salt or pepper. Is this a new thing? (If so, I hate this trend. If I want to ruin food I'm paying for, let me.)

2. Why is making school lunches so joyless?

3.Why is it, when considering more children, no one says "it's all very well when they're babies, but do you realise how many lunches you'll be making in 5 years?"

4. Why do some women look so effortlessly beautiful all the time?

5. Why is it when you let passports lapse, there is the sudden opportunity for an immediate overseas trip?

6. Why do some children (mine) forget to put their shoes on? Even though it's something they should do every day and you've already reminded them 12 times in half an hour?

7.Why do you never feel old, when you get old?

8. Why is it, when things get difficult, you never hear the right words or have things go your way so you can get the strength to deal with the rest of life?*

9. Why is there always washing to be done?

10. How did I get to this age and still not have it all figured out?

Feel free to answer one or all of the above? Or add your own.

*No need for sympathy or concern - I was watching Breaking Bad and Jesse's world was unravelling and he said, after asking for 2 days to payback a loan, "Please, I really just need someone to give me a break" and it resonated strongly with me - far stronger than I think the writers of the show intended. I remembered all those times when a simple 'I love you' or just some thing going my way would have changed days of unhappiness and stress...but not forthcoming, you sink a little further into the mire of miserableness.

Need to say, I deleted the original post for today by accident, because I'm an idiot. Riddle me this, why is it, if I get a little organised, I sabotage myself?
