A sucker born every minute...

We went to a very expensive dinner on the weekend - close to $200 a head. The word Michelin was thrown around, so in my head I imagined intricate, imaginative dishes, only to be met with salami on a bread board.
I know this is a fashionable thing, and have even been to a $950 a head (I won the tickets) party where salami on a bread board was the offering.
I am not much of a cook, and I know little about food, but even I can manage salami on a bread board - hell, sometimes I even extend to Jamon Iberico de Bellota (not really because I don't like it - that's for school lunches). However, it's usually to nibble on while waiting for the meal, not the meal itself. It's what you order in a bar before heading to the restaurant.
It is certainly not part of a dinner in the $200-$950 category.

I am not a food blogger, and you can admonish my ignorance, but I'm calling Emperors new clothes on this fashion and asking for it to stop! By all means, have it on the menu, but for meals set as a lavish gourmet extravaganza with a hefty price tag to match, it should be banished unless it's sitting on the table for us to pick on while we wait for the food to arrive.

  1. If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the UK and my friends were telling me about an exxy fine dining place they went to where a course was ONE scallop and the rest of the food was so small you almost needed a microscope to see it! I'd take salami on a bread board over micro food any time :)

  2. I agree. I am not a foodie so that may be the reason why. But I think that the right to be trendy can takeaway from the food.,

  3. I really hate salami: actually all processed meats. So I’d be so cranky about this!!!

We usually go on Groupon dates while we have four little kids but I’m looking forward to someday splashing a season’s worth of soccer fees for two kids on a meal!

    1. It was a lot of money to me - it was meant to be a special thing - fortunately I went with a friend so I hadn't paid $400 for the experience! But I felt so bad for luring her into it...

  6. Wow, Michelin or not, that sounds like a rip-off.

  7. Was it the type of place where people go just to be seen there? maybe some people are willing to pay just to say that they went. Doesn't make much sense to me though. I can understand your disappointment #dreamteam

    1. Not to be seen but to be part of a special event - a sort of magical ambiance that was also MIA...

  8. *Mouth drops open. No way. Really? Really $200 a head and you are served with a salami board?! Now that is crackers, and super disappointing to hear. Tell me the dessert was amazing? And not a stick of mint chocolate! Thanks for joining us for the #dreamteam

    1. The dessert looked more impressive but it was too sweet and I couldn't eat it (but I'll take that as my tastes rather than their fault...)

  9. $200 a head are they nuts. For that amount you can do your grocery shopping for the month. Michellin star or not, I want real food and my monies worth. I suppose they don't allow doggie bags there #dreamteam

  11. I'd be expecting a little bit more fancy too. I had an incredible carpaccio beef on thinly sliced rye with micro greens and hazelnut garnish at a tourism event which was free! That was fancy, for me anyway :D

  12. Yeah, I'd be pretty annoyed by that! I find the mid-level restaurants are so much better than the super fine-dining ones, they aren't so puffed up on their own pretensions and serve food that is amazing AND worth the price tag!

    1. Of late we've been doing a lot of the 'cheap eats' over the high end as it just seems tastier and more inventive...

  13. Sounds like a complete rip off to me. I'd be annoyed with that too.

  15. Yet, another reason why I don't care to go out to eat at a sit-down restaurant! Wow, there are some crazy things out there. A pair of NZ cooks (who won a contest, I think) are opening a restaurant at $650 a meal. No thanks.
