First of the Month Fiction - February

A little late this month, but just in time!

Write a story in exactly 100 words or less than 30 words, then link your blog (or don't, if you don't have one).

It had been an awful year. They had lost the house, he'd left her in the turmoil and she was fired after a few too many teary outbursts at work. Her world order was completely overthrown. So when she found an old lottery ticket in her handbag, it was little surprise her imagination ran away with her. There was little else for it these days. As she placed it under the scanner, her heart soared in hope. The screen flashed a verdict....”Unable to scan. Please go to counter”. Patiently she stood in line. The newsagent smiled. “You’ve won. $48.50. Congratulations!”

I know, I know. I really wanted to make her win, but I couldn't....

Add yours, and have a great month. Sorry about the fonts, it just won't let me fix it!

  1. My brother once won $100k on a scratchy. It was the first time he had purchased one. He raced home to tell my father and dad basically accused him of scratching it wrong. He thought you were only allowed to scratch three panels, not all of them to win. Needless to say, when the $100k cheque arrived, he soon changed his tune.

    1. And clearly a true story, not a bad attempt at 100 words. Now about the font issues... do you want me to look into them for you?

    2. I did the story on word and then cut and pasted (cos too lazy to count words) but now it won't let me change it to the same as the blog?? No idea why.

  2. So was she happy with the $48 or was that the last straw after a bad run? :)

    Here is mine:

She was desperate for companionship. Desperate for someone to take notice of her and decide she was their forever friend. She barked, and finally a little girl turned …

    1. That's funny how we both wrote from a dog's POV! Great mind and all...

  5. $48.50 - Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick as my mum would say! Personally I rather liked the large font, I didn't even need to wear my glasses :)

  7. HA! This happened to my parents yesterday - they won 42 bucks. WOO HOO! lol I'm another one who prefers a larger font.

    Here's mine:

He'd stolen the contraband. He didn't want to relive his time behind bars. But he loved the illicit thrill. Soon the neighbourhood gang would corner him.  Distant sirens taunted him. He hit the pavement. A car swerved, honking. He had to get to his hiding place! The van pulled up. A uniformed woman swooped on him.  "GOTCHA!" He dropped the bone and cowered. Later, the woman handed his trembling body back to his owners. He was home! "Naughty boy, Jake!" they trilled, happy to see him regardless. Jake wagged his tail, gleeful. He wasn't going back to the animal shelter.

  8. Great little story. and 48.50 makes anyone feel like a winner. Hubby's parents got 5 numbers once - missed millions by a single digit as well. Got a few thousand pounds though and shared it with the 3 kids!

  10. I was hoping she had won the big one but I gues that would have been too cliched!

  11. I'd be happy with that! Of course you have to be in it to win it, and I am never in it. If only hubby would win the big one.
