Memory - a writing challenge

Giving the writing challenge a go on the prompt MEMORY

Memory is so fragile. It changes ever so slightly with every recall. That's how two people at the same event give different descriptions.

She had remembered their first date so clearly. The candles, the cranky waiter, how they had giggled every time he walked away from them. Simon had been so nervous. She smiled nostalgically, marvelling how fate had brought them together.

Simon was amazed he hadn't seen the signs from the start. The restaurant she picked had been awful. Even the waiter was rude.  The food was disgusting and she didn't seem to care. How had he not seen they had nothing in common? It was time to tell her about Julie, but perhaps their anniversary wasn't the right time for it. He'd wait a few weeks. Maybe next month, once he'd found a place to live...

(I only wrote for 5 minutes but next time I'll try to do the 10)

  1. This is so true. I think I need to bring back some memories with Al and see how he remembers them - I wonder how many there will be where we have totally different recollections about the moment.
    Have a wonderful weekend xox

    1. I often think with siblings when you listen to them tell stories and they argue over how it really happened...

  2. Yes it it strange and disconcerting....I read a book about it once....That the brain does not record like a machine but tries to process multiple stimuli so most memories are not accurate and different from others we share them with.

    1. I read once we are actually not remembering the event but the last time we recalled the event.

  3. The only problem is Christina has a much better memory than I do - I think doing this could start an argument! Ha ha!

  6. Ooh, you left me wanting to know what happens next!

My own memory is something which needs a little work, I have to confess. Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday

  7. I typically think my memory is stellar- except I tend to remember things how I want...not always how they happen. I have a bit of a dramatic flair. ;)

  8. Loved this little snippet of a story! And it's so true that our memories can change over time, and that we can remember things so differently from other people! x #KCACOLS

  9. I agree that it is SO fickle, have you ever watched 'The Affair'? They tell it from the memories of two people and show little things like how the girls dress is different when she remembers it compared to when the man remembers it! It's amazing the difference these things make. Enjoyed your short story, thanks for sharing! #kcacols

  10. I read an article recently about the notion that when we remember certain things, we're actually remembering the last time we remembered them - rather than remembering the event itself. This is one reason why details and facts are so easily skewed or misinterpreted over time. Interesting theory! Good on you for sticking with your writing challenge.

  12. Great writing, I want to read on. Memory is so intriguing , it is interesting when we remember things differently. I find this with my partner and also when discussing the past with my sisters sometimes. xxx

  13. Great piece of writing, memory is so different for some people, you will always find that one person will remember something that other's don't.

  14. Memory is a funny thing, how two people can have varied accounts of the same thing.
