Things I Don’t Get Cos I’m Old…

By Lydia C. Lee

When I was younger I was on board with pretty much everything – now I look around and there seems to be more and more things that I don’t understand. I’m not necessarily saying they’re bad things, I just don’t get why you’d bother with the effort involved given the pay off. Or I just don’t get that you’d think it looks good or that you’d be interested. I put this down to the fact that I must have hit that age, when I no longer ‘get’ the young people…(you young people and your loud music!). I never thought I’d be that old person, but evidently, I am. So here is the first 25 of a never ending list of things I don’t get because I’m old….

1. The Sims – watching pretend people watch TV
2. Early Teen girls wearing the same dresses (when in 4 years this will be a major social fail)
3. Twilight – ‘nuff said.
4. Midriff tops on people who should know better
5. Cut offs where the pockets hang below the end of the shorts
6. Jeans worn below the butt…Boxers aren’t meant to be seen people! Pull your pants up. It looks    stupid. That includes you, Kanye.
7. Twitter.
8. Masterchef/Idol/AGT/The Voice and all of the rest of them
9. People that don’t respond to private messages on Facebook – if it’s not on public display, they aren’t interested.
10. Couples that dress the same.
11. Families that all wear white, like they’re in a Ralph Lauren ad
12. Nits – what’s the point? What part of the life cycle are they? Does anyone eat them?
13. Face Piercings – not because I think they look bad, I just think they look like they’d hurt. And I get a little nervous with the eyebrow one if the person’s using chopsticks…
14. People that can read Harry Potter over and over – finish book 8 and go back to book 1 straight away.
15. Women who join bookclubs but don't actually want to talk about books (or even read the books).
16. Why is it Zed in MIB and Pulp Fiction, not Zee?
17. People ‘liking’ bad comments on Facebook. Are you even reading that something terrible has just happened to me? Or do you hate me?
18. Paying  $1000 for a plain white tshirt from a French designer fashion house – with no logos.
19. Paying $110 denim skirts for 12 year olds from a designer,  that look like they have marginally more material that a belt.
20. Talking to your phone to ask it a question. Is it really that hard?????
21. The need to pile soft toys on the back window of your car. Is that for your rear view or the people behind you? Or does it hide your stash?
22. The need to change who you are in every event of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games…
23. How much mess a kid can make in one day – and why? WHY?!
24. That you can be born in 1983 and have a real job.
25. Twitter. I know I’ve said that but having spent a week on it, I’m none the wiser.

I wrote this a year ago, so I can say my view on Twitter has improved, and I get it a lot more than I did. Does that mean I'm getting younger??  Do you have things you don't 'get' due to advanced aged related issues?

  2. Oh I have to say there are a couple of things on this list that I can't agree with. I love the Sims, I don't know why but I find it very relaxing to be able to play God in other peoples lives. And I never let them watch TV. That is boring!

The private message thing on facebook, I am terrible with that because I always forget to check or that they are there! Its so bad!

And while I don't read them constantly I have read the 7 Harry Potter novels more than a few times each. I can't help myself. They are my little escape from the world.

    I am totally with you however on numbers 2, 4, 5, 6, 12, 21 and 23. Especially 23!

    1. I am older than you. It's not saying these things are wrong, it's saying I don't get them, cos I'm old. So by disagreeing, you are confirming youthfulness...

  3. Lydia, totally agree with number 21. What is with that? Another one you should add is why check in to where you are on Facebook? I never understand why if you're out having a good time, why don't you just enjoy yourself rather than saying, hey everyone I'm at such and such a place. Hmmm I'm off to work on my own list ;)

    1. I find check in a bit weird - are you meant to join them if you're nearby? Or is it purely to let people know you're out?

  4. Oh midriff tops! I'm with you! Chimpanzees eat nits, I think. P'rhaps you could get a couple of those as pets, and you'll be sorted?

    1. Oooooooo, I'd love a chimp, but I saw that movie...that was sad. And a little scary...

  5. LOL @ that you can be born in 1983 and have a real job!
Sometimes I like statuses on facebook as a show of solidarity - not because I'm particularly pleased that your kid is painting the walls with spew. :)

    1. Yes, I have a friend who says I 'like' you, not necessarily the crap you speak of...the Voltaire of Facebook.

  6. HAHAHHA i love your list! All of it! (I think, therefore, I'm old..) I used to say to my friends - 'can you believe there are people out here in the pub with us who were born in the EIGHTIES!?' Now it's those born in the nineties. Terrifying.

    1. My partner is quick to point out things happened in the 90's were 20 years ago, not 10 - my brain makes every thing 10 years ago

    2. Oh me too. In my mind the 90's will ALWAYS be only 10 years ago!

  7. Love your list. I totally didn't get Twitter at first either, I've gotten better with it, but it's still overwhelming at times, so I'll just have a break from it now and then.

Not only do I not get a lot of the things you mentioned eg. face peircings, midriff tops etc, I've noticed some young people post really outrageous stuff on Facebook of a sexual nature. Maybe I'm still naive or a prude but it sometimes shocks me.

  8. HAHAHA. Twitter is so mental. I totally hate it. No I love it. No I hate it. OK I love it.
Frankly I don't get tattoos. I really don't. I mean aren't they meant to be a sort of socially deviant thing to do, kind of a rebellion? What's the point if everyone has one? Like even your mum?

  9. Cut off jeans that display V-Jays. Not cool. I tell teenage girls off about it.

I agree with most of your list except for Twilight. I am a sucker for, well..suckers.

  10. I'm in a book club and there is only about 3 of us who bother to read the books and it is soo frustrating!

    1. what is that about???? I so don't get it. Especially when they've made me read a really crappy book. And then on one else reads it (including the person who chose it)

  11. You think twitter is nuts? You should try 4-Square! It's a social media platform where you check in at every single place you visit and if you go there enough times you get to be the virtual "Mayor" of that place. Like you can be the Mayor of your local café or book shop - totally mental.

And yes to the cut off jean shorts with the pockets hanging out - that was tarty 20 years ago and will still be tarty 20 years from now.

Thanks for linking up Lydia - you always manage to present a totally unique point of view :)

  12. People ignored me on Twitter so I stopped doing it - I expect that really showed them ....! I sometimes check into places on FB when I'm not really there so that people think my life is more exciting than it is - there's kind of a theme developing here isn't there ...

    1. I once checked in by accident (cos I'm old and don't know what I'm doing) to a place in Byron Bay then copped all this abuse from friends that live up there for going up there & not letting them know - I had to admit I was still in Sydney. My new catchphrase stolen from someone here (will check & give credit when not on phone) "I'm not drunk, I'm an idiot"

  13. I agree with everything but I have no idea what Sims is, I don't like it when young girls wear short, short shorts that you can see their butt cheeks and their hanging pockets. And I like twitter (Fb love/hate)
Interesting to see that you wrote it last year and you still agree with the majority of it.

  14. How funny about the nits! I'd never thought of that! You are quite right. Most little pests at least have a purpose! That's the nits I'm referring to as pests - not the young people. :)
