Conversations with the mirror

Mirror, Mirror on the wall,
Who's the fairest of them all?

Alice climbed through the looking glass...

Smoke & mirrors.

Isn't it strange that there are so many evils and oddities and deceptions linked with mirrors? When all they really show is us, as we are to the rest of the world?

Funny how so many of us avoid mirrors. We are very happy within ourselves but when we see ourselves in a mirror, we don't like what is reflected there? When all it is, is the actual image of ourselves.

There is a wonderful saying, the best mirror is an old friend.

Here's to old friends and reflected glory, magnified praise and most important of all, good times.

  2. Great post - when I feel great, the mirror is my best friend but when I don't - I can't stand it (I'm just a teeny tiny bit - OK, very very fickle when it comes to mirrors !!!)
    Have a great day !

    1. I just hate them because in my head I look completely different to how I actually do....

    1. I read it somewhere a while ago, but I can't actually remember where...an old Russian proverb or something...

  4. Smoke and mirrors is often said down here in Canberra in relation to political fluff. Quite a lot of that going on right now! (new PM)

    1. Indeed - I think it's sort of sad how quickly we take all that in our stride. In other countries they'd riot in the streets if a PM was ousted...

  5. I love the idea that the best mirror is an old friend, I have not heard of that before
and I am always quite amused that so many fairy tales and stories centre around mirrors, makes you wonder how long humanity has questioned this idea of "self"

    1. Mirrors have strong imagery in fiction - it's obviously been an issue for a long, long time...

  7. What did people do before mirrors? Did it mean they felt better about themselves?

    1. quite possibly - but when you were just trying to not be eated by a sabertooth tiger, you probably didn't care what you looked like...

    1. I loved the rabbit hole, but the looking glass provided that warped view...of Alice.

  9. You are so right. Even at the most basic level of when I'm having a bad day, and I just know I'm not going to be happy with how I look - so I go out of my way to avoid the floor to ceiling mirrored robe running the length of our bedroom. Which is tough to do. Especially when you're inherently unco-ordinated and it means walking backwards through the room!

    1. that made me laugh - as someone unco-ordinated, I get how tough a task that would be...:)

  10. The one time I particularly fear the mirror is first thing in the morning. I sleep au naturel and there is a large mirror directly facing the loo in my ensuite. Who on earth thought that would be a good idea? A naked, dishevelled 40 something mother is no oil painting at 6am, unless the painting was one from The Night Gallery.

  11. I really like that saying! I will try to remember that line next time I run into my old friend!

  12. Some mirrors reflect us better than others though, haha! (or maybe it's a matter of lighting!)
