May the force be with you

I was feeling down for no reason, but as I'd just had lunch with mum, it was safe to presume it was something to do with dad's death. I just couldn't shake the depresssed feeling, so as I drove home, I decided I'd stop in at the Powerhouse and check out the Star Wars Identities Exhibition. As a member, it was $11.50, so the fact that I only had 45 mins to charge through didn't matter so much. Ideally you want 75-90 minutes.

It did the trick. Time spent with a Wookiee usually does.

Seeing those familiar creatures that have spanned my lifetime since I was a child brought a spring to my step. Swiping my wristband, making choices as I created my character was enough to pull me out of my funk.

See the reflected exit man? #WeekendReflection

I would like to go back as I didn't have time to listen to the film displays which had a basis in psychology of what shapes us humans (At a cursory listen, they seem good for those with teens that are puzzling their behaviour or looking at careers) but for my purpose that day, the game part was perfect on it's own.

Tickets are $36 or $23 per child, and a family pass is $95. If you haven't been, why not plan a trip these school holidays? It's here until the 10th of June at the Powerhouse Museum.

I am loving that I can manage the ebb and flow of grief. As Qui-Gon Jinn says "Your focus determines your reality". Self care can come in strange forms. I am also loving  that I live so near the Powerhouse that I can 'pop in' for an hour. I will be sad when the Liberal government destroy something so wonderful for the sake of a land sale.

What are you loving this week?

  1. You're so right - grief comes in waves & self-care can come from unexpected directions. Take care. Now for a confession - I think I must be one of the only people on this planet who has never seen a Star Wars - not even the original. Shhhh don't tell anyone.

  2. Glad you can manage the ebb and flow of grief, and know how to take care of yourself. May the force be with you. #Lovin'LifeLinky

  3. I understand the grief Lydia. It's 16 months since I lost my Dad. Whilst I'm not sobbing every day as I was in the beginning - it still comes in waves and I can be perfectly fine one minute and then something triggers a memory and there's stabbing pain and tears. I think this will happen for the rest of my life though hopefully with less frequency and not quite as much sting! On a happier note - that star wars exhibition looks fabulous and would've been a wonderful distraction. Take care of yourself! #TeamLovinLife

  4. Grief is both weird and wonderful. I found listening to Rachel Devine's It's OK Not to Be Ok the best. She has a facebook page too which explains grief in all its glory and that the rules of grief are that there are no rules. I last went to the Powerhouse in 2014 with my brother and we re-lived our attendance at the Beatles Concert in 1964. It was ace to read some of the paperwork behind the tour too. A great memory for us. Star Wars means nothing much to me except it was something our now 40 yo son got into as did our now 18 yo grandson. Denyse x

  5. My dad's been gone for almost 8yrs and it would have been his 80th birthday yesterday. I felt melancholy about it. I hadn't slept much the night before and suspect that's why. He was unwell and so in some ways it was almost a relief when he passed, but he was also probably my favourite person in the world. I'm close to my mum but my dad and I were more similar personality-wise so he'd annoy me as much as he'd draw me in.

As for Star Wars, I've never seen the more recent movies so don't actually recognise some of the newer characters!

  10. I read a brilliant article at the weekend by John Pavlovitz "Everyone around you is grieving. Go easy." It might resonate with you too. Thanks for the reminder about this exhibition. Hubby is a mad Star Wars fan and I had forgotten about this - must get tickets before it finishes.
