How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are? Satchel Paige

I was looking to fly to Ultra because I'm a big Sam Feldt fan and both Fefe and Tiesto cancelled (my xmas present!) but as I'm off to Hobart this week with my bookclub, I thought I needed to be around with the kids more before I go.

Luckily, I saw that he's doing a show at Marquee. Unfortunately, the show starts after midnight and I need to wear something 'dress to impress' for a 'strict dress code'. I do not own the clothes they mean, nor do I have the body to carry them off if I did. More to the point, my face is going to be the problem, more specifically, my age and I think they'll use my clothes as an excuse to refuse me entry.

At festivals I just dress for comfort, to be able to jump about and I'm pretty invisible after the bag check. This time, I feel they'll be judging my appearance, and whether I'll bring the vibe down. Which I will, even just hiding in the corner by myself.

I also don't want to get COVID before my flight to Hobart so want to wear a mask. To just add to the weirdness of my being there. On the plus, the mask will hide my old lady face.

So after a 10-month hiatus from my neglected list, I'm back on it. Adding one more first-time experience before the gate closes on me.

This one really has brought out a raft of insecurities and fear. I feel weird that I want to do things my friends my age don't. It doesn't make me young at heart, it just makes me odd and out of step with everyone. I don't fit in with the people there and I don't fit in with the people that don't want to be there. I just don't fit in.

I've learnt to ignore the looks or laugh along with the comments along the lines of "OMG! You're so old!" and yes, that literally was squealed in my face one time. But this time it might be a conversation that refuses me entry. I feel like I'm underage and trying to get in on a false ID. It will be disguised as a different reason but it will be an official 'you are so old we don't want you here'. That will be a hard blow to my ego and self-esteem. It must be what a lot of men see reflected in others as they retire out of company life. So wish me luck for 30 & 31!

  1. Keep enjoying life your way. I hope you have a fantastic time. Thank you for linking up with #weekendcoffeeshare

  2. Hope it all goes well for you Lydia, they're lucky to have you wanting to go in my opinion!

  3. I always think of you as being much younger than me because you're so cool Lydia. I fit the crowd who don't go to nightclubs or want to go to anything that starts after 7:30pm! So kudos to you and I hope you get in and have an absolute blast (and tell us all about it) x

  4. I'm having a hard time imagining going to something that starts after midnight but good for you and screw anybody that thinks you are too old to be there #dreamteam

  5. I love that you are just wanting to love and enjoy the life you have without wanting to care about what anyone thinks. Hopefully you have a great time.

  6. Just catching up now....and yes, grandson aka Firelite was at Ultra! He & his older sister also went to FooFighters... none of this is truly of interest to me these days but I know you would enjoy this! Denyse #weekendcoffeeshare

  7. Best way to be hope you enjoy it x #dreamteam

  8. Oh no! Never let anyone make you feel out of place or too old to do something that you love. I wish I could find the video clip to show you, there's a dance group of hot young 20 somethings strutting their amazing stuff - it might be to reggaetón - and in amongst the troop is an 70 + lady getting down and loving life to the max! The best bit is they fully embrace her. Go shake your tail feather and enjoy!! Thank you for joining us for the #DreamTeam x

  9. I see other mums out partying and have no idea how they have the energy! I am teaching myself to crochet so feel proper old lady but am also learning Italian so my thing is developing new skills :) Thanks for linking up with #DreamTeam

  10. How did I miss this? I hope you get in - as you say, they wouldn't say it to your face, but feeling out of step can be a tough one to get through. I admire you though - I'm up at 4.30 each morning so anything after 8.30 is too late for me!

  11. You do you! You're the coolest person I know (young or old!) I love your list and am so impressed with how many things you've ticked off. Can't wait to hear all about your big night out!

  12. I'm glad you included the video or I wouldn't have known who Sam Feldt was! But having seen the video now I do know the song - and I love it! I think good for you - you do you boo as they say! Have fun and enjoy!

  13. Firelite and his friends had a wonderful week in Melbs...Thank you so much for linking up your blog post for the FIRST #LifeThisMonth Link Up on Denyse Whelan Blogs. I do hope you return for the next one: Monday 11 April 2022. Warm wishes,Denyse.

    1. I absolutely bet they did! How HUGE for him!

  14. I understand how you feel. I try to avoid the situations where I might feel uncomfortable or out of place. There are lots of other things to do where you feel good.
