As a kid, I was terrified of the Big Bad Banksia men. Which is weird because I was less terrified of Snake who really orchestrated all the menace.
For those OS they don't know the May Gibbs story - a picture of the villainous Big Bad Banksia Men is here. Anyone my age was terrified of them as a child, when our parents chose to read this to us as a bed time story...
Have you ever gone back to a familliar story and discovered it's quite different to how you remember?

The suburb of Banksia should have more Banksias.
ReplyDeleteHehehe. Yes!!
DeleteI've never heard of that... but yes, as a child I read lots of nursery rhymes and never really gave much thought as to what they were about but now as an adult listening to some of them they're actually quite dark and very, very weird.
ReplyDeleteWhat scared us as kids doesn't scare us much as adults. The stories live though.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday, Lydia. ♥
Both of my siblings were up here for a rare get-together and we talked about our memories and after a while, you don’t even know if their real memories or something that you’ve thought about so often that it created a false memory, but I think you always remember the things that scared you
ReplyDeleteMemory is so strange - and it's only noticed how fluid it is when you get together and discuss it with other people that were there...
DeleteNot so much, but have rewatched a movie and thought, where was my head the first time I watched because not at all what I thought it was about. lol Never heard of that story. May have to check it out. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteah I love banksias, we have many many varieties in Western Australia. A few years ago I wrote a blog post about Banksias and linking it back to Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie - what a classic - and yes a very scary bedtime book! Enjoy the rest of your week. I am joining you at Pictorial Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful in color, too.
