Don't ask if you're good enough, know that you are.

Daniel Dae Kim tweeted, on the USA making the 16 in the World Cup by goal difference, even though they lost their final game in the round: 'Whether you walk in from the front door or the back, what really matters is that you're still invited to the party.GO ‪#‎TeamUSA‬ ‪#‎WorldCup2014'

I think there's a lot in life that could use that attitude. We may feel like kids at the grown up table, at work or with friends, but if you are there, you are there for a reason. Does how you got there matter? All that matters, is that you are there.

When Steven Bradbury won his Gold medal, I used to get annoyed that he was asked to justify his win. The fact is, he did what he needed to in order to get to the final. The cards fell his way and he won gold. He won it. That is all. He didn't steal it, he didn't get given it. He won it. He didn't falter or make a mistake. He continued to do what he needed to do and he won the gold.

We don't need to doubt ourselves. There will be plenty of others to do that for us. We just need to do what we need to do, and keep doing it. We don't need to worry ourselves with the success of others, or what is expected. If we are happy doing what we are doing, that is the gold we are after.
This is from Lee-Ann Walker's wonderful blog:

  1. I think the journey and the destination are both important and both things we can learn from. Even if you qualify for the WC by a goal difference- that is the journey and in all matter of speaking, perhaps an even more awesome and noteworthy journey that qulaifying like everyone else. Love this line especially: "We don't need to doubt ourselves. There will be plenty of others to do that for us." I'm going to try and remember that for myself xx

    1. As everyone's favourite and loudly acknowledged talented writer, I am surprised you should ever need to remember that line...only jealousy would cause others to doubt you, lovely lady!

  3. I love this. SO true. The idea about feeling like a kid at the grown up table resonates with me. Work can be an initimidating place - I always need to remind myself that I'm just as qualified, experienced and able as my colleagues. Great you call BS on chucking a Bradbury - he worked just as hard as the others - it was his year. Great post L. X

    1. I know, it really annoyed me at the time. I would have been all 'in your face - I have gold, you don't! Go f^*& yourself!' which is probably why I'm not a professional athlete (not because of lack of sporting prowess, naturally...)

  5. Oh this is such a lovely reminder and pick-me-up. Sometimes I get so doubtful of myself.. need to remember that I've done a lot to get to where I am now, and that I need to embrace that!

  7. Love the analogy of a kid at the grown up table. I often feel like that, but as you say, you have to back yourself and leave doubt at the door.

  11. Love the flower one on Leanne's site, it's so very true. We just have to be the best that we can be, and yes sometimes we're not rewarded but that's not the point, we need to live a life that we can feel proud of!

  13. I love the line about feeling like a kid at the adults table. I often feel like that and was saying to a friend a few weeks ago that I keep waiting for the tap on the shoulder from someone to tell me the game is up!

  15. Yes Lydia! It's so easy to get caught up in the comparing, and self doubt. We need to acknowledge what we've accomplished and accept it :)

  19. Totally with you on Bradbury. He worked his butt off to get to the final. It's not like he was half a lap back or way out of contention. He was right there, kept his feet, and got over the line first. Congratulations to him.
