First of the Month Fiction - May

This is a late starter, due to my last minute weekend in Daylesford, hot on the heels of my return from Europe (don't I sound fancy?). So it will be open until the end of the month until the June one appears.

For newcomers, write a story in exactly 100 words or less than 30 words in the comments, link your blog below so we can see your unfettered writing style. Mine is 30...

She smiled at her exhausted daughter, asleep on the sofa, confirming her job as a mother wasn't yet over. She scooped up her granddaughter and tiptoed out of the room.

(Cheesy, I know, but it is Mother's day and all that.)

I love your mother's day story. Very sweet.

    Mine isn't so sweet:

He was dead. She'd read all about murderers who poisoned their husbands with arsenic, secretly admiring them. Fred had saved her the trouble by conveniently having a heart attack.
"I'm so sorry for your loss," Susan said, sniffling.
"It's fine," she replied. Susan stared. She wasn't going to pretend. She wasn't glad exactly, just matter of fact. Think of the money that would be saved. She'd always been practical. The funeral passed in a blur. Then she found out about Fred's will. There was nothing left. She was broke and not so smug now. Susan didn't speak to her anymore.
