I'm in a writers group and recently they asked a question about how much planning you do before writing a book - the outline, character profiles etc. It was very interesting to see the answers.
Then I came across this quote by E. L. Doctorow:
“Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.”
I guess it varies book by book and the power of the inspiration. It is rumoured that Stevenson wrote The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mister Hyde in three days after dreaming it.
For the writers of fiction out there, what do you do?

Excellent photo - and a fascinating description of writing!
ReplyDeletebeautiful misty landscape
ReplyDeleteLoneliness comes to mind when looking at this. Nice, quiet photo.
ReplyDeleteNice post and photo eerie but interesting view too :-)
ReplyDeleteHave a foggytastic week 👍
Love the photo. Fog is a frequent occurrence in my neck of the woods this time of year.
ReplyDeleteNow THAT'S some dense fog! Lovely to look at but I wouldn't want to drive in it!

Thank you for entering in our game! And even I want to write a book, for the moment I write only on the blog. Small pieces, but what they have in common is that some words or images trigger the ideas like a 'bang', from nowhere. Sometimes is funny, sometimes is strange.
ReplyDeleteI like the fog and the image. Probably because the fog creates a special scene on which we can improvise...
We have the game every week, if you want to share with us other images! All the best!
That is a great quote, goes perfect with the picture that you chose!
ReplyDeleteI love the moody scene - such a great snap! Thanks for sharing and for linking up to #MySundaySnapshot.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful photo!
ReplyDeleteI've been to Cheltenham Literature Festival this week, listening to some of my favourite authors speak. Three out of four of them don't plot - they just come up with a setting or a character and start writing from there and see where the story takes them. I was amazed!

That's really interesting, isn't it? I love hearing about writers process. Google Dr Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. That story is so bananas - written in 3 days, wife burnt it, rewritten from memory.
