Sharing joy from the Magic House

My kids are growing up and we have so much 'stuff'. I used to drop it at the women's shelter but now they won't take it, so I leave it on the fence for people to take as they come by. And they do. I get a kick everytime something disappears.

The other day a guy just introduced himself to me and said he’s been wanting to meet whoever lived here to thank me. He often took things for his two daughters and they call it the Magic House. He said it had encouraged him not to just throw things away. He then took an expensive book on fossils (for adults) for his 5 year old who wanted to be a scientist. I told him to tell her that the magic house lady says we need more scientists and that’s a very good choice. He said that will encourage her...It was a lovely exchange that carried me through the day.

I love the idea that other children get to enjoy the toys, books and clothes that gave us so many fond memories. I love it even more when they come back and let me know what they've taken over the years.
I love that it encourages others to do the same.

I'd really love it if I got to see a little Flash come past or visit....

What are you loving this week?

Linking with #AwwMondays because it does make me go Awww. Yesterday I walked out and kids were excitedly picking over 'Street Treasure' and it really lifted my mood.

  4. What a great idea! I've left furniture on the road for people to take and it's disappeared and it's kinda nice that someone's getting use out of something you no longer need.

  5. What a lovely story! You get to part with toys you no longer need, other children enjoy them, and good for the environment.

  6. I love this idea. What a great thing to do. We all have junk that just gets put in the bin - how lovely to pass it on. I wonder why the woman's shelter stopped taking things. I have a lot of small hotel sized personal products like shampoos, shower gels etc that I've been collecting, that I thought I might take to my local shelter. Coming to you today from #LovinLife

  7. You are a thoughful and generous soul. I have given much away as the grandkids are all older. Some have taken favorurite memories home with them but I still have two boxes of toys/books/games for when they visit...and a dolls' house that my now 22 yr old granddaughter got for our house. She tells me 'I'll have that one day Grandma".

  8. This is a great idea. We often put things out the front of our house, and we often pick up things from others'. The other day I picked up a gorgeous kids' kitchen setting just down the street from my daughter's house. We knocked on the door to check (it looked so good and wanted to make sure they were getting rid of it) and introduce ourselves. It's lovely when things get a second (or third or fourth) life of enjoyment, and good for the landfill problem.

  13. that's a brilliant idea! Here in Edinburgh there are a few little bookcases around town, outside people's homes for people to take or leave books, but your idea is even better than that!
