The streets around us have been littered with election signs, you can't walk 100 metres without seeing someone's face looking down at you. I was quite surprised when walking to the Sydney Comedy Festival and I saw this election poster. I'd not seen the face before. I looked a little closer and burst out laughing. Well played, Bell Shakespeare!
I have tickets to the show already, but now I'm quite excited. This is one of my favourite Shakespeare plays because it's the first one I saw as a normal play, not knowing the story, not knowing how it would end. Engaged as the events unfolded, on the edge of my seat as I wondered what decisions the characters would make. Would they be won over with reason or would they steam on ahead?
The tag line 'Rome for Romans!' made me laugh. Very One Nation of him. (Tickets are available here)
The flowers were my purchase at the polling booth. I also got a spicy chutney, a delicious plum and vanilla cake and of course, a sausage in a roll! Did you get any treats at the polls?
Hmm, at the voting polls you guys have food for purchase? And flowers? That is very interesting. Our voting locations are nondescript for the most part...school gyms, YMCAs, abandoned/closed stores where the voting machines are set up.
ReplyDeleteInteresting the way that campaign poster was strategically wrapped around the pole. What I hate is that after the elections are over, we are left with posters littering every surface in the city.
The polling place is in a school hall so the P&C of the school sells cakes and sausage in a roll (tho now also bacon & egg rolls and haloumi rolls) and then our school sells flowers and there's usually 2nd hand books and craft stalls too as fundraisers.
DeleteHi Lydia, I must confess I have never heard of him or the play. You're so much more culturally aware than I am! Very clever advertising at the time of an election! lol Hope you're having a wonderufl week and thanks for linking up with #WWWhimsy xo
ReplyDeleteNo treats at the polls because we are permanent postal voters. I admit I miss (kind of) being in schools - teacher nerd that I am - but do not miss the queues. And WHAT a great outcome for our country. Nuff said. Right. Denyse x
ReplyDeleteI've never experienced treats at polls. Perhaps I should suggest it next time, perhaps more people will turn up to vote!
ReplyDeleteOur public primary schools are often polling centres so they use it as a way for the P&C to fundraise....and they make a small fortune...
DeleteI believe our local school has a stall as well as the democracy sausages. Your flowers are gorgeous. There is an event coming to QPAC which has all of Shakespeare's plays in one. Not sure how that will work but it might be interesting. Have a great week, Lydia. Sue L #TeamWWWhimsy
ReplyDeleteThat's great that you can purchase flowers and treats at the polling location and support fundraising worthy causes at the same time. Enjoy the play!
ReplyDeleteGoing to vote is like going for a picnic!
