I was listening to a book on grief and it had a chapter titled Self Indulgence - I was expecting a lecture on not wallowing but it was literally 'indulge yourself' - eat the cake, have the bath, laze about - give yourself permission to do whatever makes you feel good. More what we refer to as self care these days.
I can't find why or when this happened.
It reminds me of the day it was pointed out in someone's blog that mental health was not a negative. We all had mental health, either good or bad. It was the same as health. We do things that are good for our health and bad for our health every single day.
But this shame and negativity attached to self indulgence seem a really nasty frame for pleasure. I wonder if it goes back to medieval time where people worked to the bone while the wealthy lords frolicked around? Why are we as humans so judgmental on other people's happiness these days? Why are we so judgemental on our own actions that make us happy? If we eat the cake? If we take the day off chores? There's an internal feeling of being naughty.

Self Indulgence isn't a bad thing. We need to take care of ourselves. It's important if we want to care for others.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Happy Tuesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous day and rest of the week, Lydia. Hugs. ♥
That's interesting. It definitely has more of a negative connotation these days.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen it as negative as long as it's not excessive. I have encountered negative feelings by others in regards to it, though. Same about mental health. If physical health isn't a negative term as such, mental health isn't, either.
ReplyDeleteToday, however, some people just seem to wait for an opportunity to judge for the sake of judging. I'm trying to avoid doing it myself (not perfect, but trying) and to avoid those kind of people.
I love that the Moomin bath bomb made you happy.

Glebe?
ReplyDeleteYes, just near the fishmarkets.
DeleteI believe the Connotation, Denotation is such a game changer- Actual meaning and the thought meaning. The word self indulgent is not bad as long as in moderation, like food. However the thought of the word, what people perceive is where the issue comes.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a lovely week. I try to indulge whenever I can-- I do feel like a lot of the negative connotation comes from that belief that one must always be working and productive which I just don't buy into.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I am a fan of self indulgence that doesn't harm others or deprive them of anything. I am retired and my time is my own now. So I love drinking coffee, reading newspapers and eating breakfast in the morning. I am very jealous of my time and I am quick to say no on requests that I don't want to do.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with the first commenter here.

I think self-indulgence is good or bad depending on the personality of the person self-indulging: If it is a person who is narcissistic, selfish and completely uninterested in the feelings or thoughts of other people, then the self indulgence will definitely be bad. If the person who self-indulges is considerate of others, cares about their fellow-humans, then certainly the self indulgence will be good. To give an example, I paint and that is a self-indulgent activity. However, I often give my paintings as gifts to people I like and who like my work. Win-win ;-) Thank you for taking part in the "My Sunday Best" meme.
