Kea

While in Auckland, because the weather looked like it would sour my afternoon ramble, I decided to head to the zoo to see a Kiwi instead (more on that to come).

The zoo has brilliant aviaries that replicate forests that you can walk through both the ground and treetops of.

I saw a Kea feeding on a rock, and it seemed content to let me photograph it.

The Kea is a large bird in the parrot family that is found in the forest and alpine regions of the South Island of New Zealand. It nests in burrows or the crevices in the roots of trees.

Sadly, this extremely smart bird (that can apparently solve logic puzzles according to wiki) was once killed by humans as they feared it would attack sheep, so now it is uncommon (though protected since 1986). It remains endangered.

  1. Oh good, at least you saw the clever kea in the zoo! We didn't see a single kea in New Zealand, not even at the tunnel to Milford Sound, where they are supposedly always...
Thanks for your comment. As for the opera you mentioned - do you mean the scandalous opera "Sancta" in Stuttgart? That's the only one that comes to mind on the subject... I wouldn't be interested in seeing that opera; scandalous provocation is usually a way of covering up bad quality. The music certainly doesn't seem to be the main focus - and when I go to the opera, I usually want to hear music that I like. Here I'm sending you an article in German - you can translate it by pasting the link into Google Translate, entering German as the original language and English on the other side.

All the best, hugs and lovely October days, Traude
