Why I write...(again)

I wrote a lengthy post on it here, but I saw this quote and thought it summed it up perfectly

'We photograph things in order to drive them out of our minds. My stories are a way of shutting my eyes.”

― Roland Barthes, Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography

  1. I can relate to that quote.

  2. Very interesting quote. I take photos of our dog, and my family so I can watch them later, and just smile.

  3. I'm not very visual so it's not the same for me. And I re-read your original post. I feel like I have a voice (a certain way I talk and write - that people say is exactly what I'm like when I meet them) - but struggle more with what I want to say.

I've often used the quote, 'I write so I know what I think,' and that does help explain what I get out of writing but it often means my words (though cathartic) are pointless for others and only of use to me. If that makes sense.

  4. For me it is the opposite - I write to remind myself and so that my sons have the opportunity to do this too. Have a nice weekend!

  5. I write to put my thoughts in order, and to communicate with others in order to find connection. But I do make lists to banish them from my mind. So I get it to some degree.

  6. Why do I write? I write for others to read, perhaps to educate (the teacher in me) or to entertain, draw a smile. When no one reads me I feel bad. Really bad the day someone told me what I wrote wasn't poetry, at least that time for that write. I had told her what I had observed, her overusing (I didn't even use that word or criticize her) a certain word, and she took that badly. She avoids me now in a virtual way even though we may be on the same page physically.

    1. Oh yes, your neat picture causes me to think. Right now it made me think of a giant coconut that I brought home fetched from a distant place.

  13. I like the quote. Perceptions need to be expressed and put into some kind of order and many choose words and/or photos to get things out of their heads and hearts.

  14. I think that's funny - I don't take photos to drive things out of my head, but on the contrary to keep them better. And for the same reason I write. I preserve, I organize my thoughts, I manage to track down thoughts that run in circles, I sometimes find out about myself while writing ...

  15. I photograph to remember, kind of the opposite. Sometimes I can visualize an event or person better from a photographic image than the one I experienced live. Maybe it has to do with details. Life sometimes moves so fast we don't notice everything. - Margy

  18. I photograph to capture the moment as I see it, giving what I think is important centre stage, putting it in the context of my thoughts at the time. Heck, that's why I write too! ;-)
